3 "LIKE A GOOD NEIGHBOR" Luke 10:25-37

4 “Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:30-37).

5 "LIKE A GOOD NEIGHBOR" Reason For The Parable

6 Reason For The Parable 1) The question of the lawyer.
“And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?” So he answered and said, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’” And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.” But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” (Luke 10:25-29).

7 Reason For The Parable 1) The question of the lawyer.

8 Reason For The Parable 2) Definition of two words:
Justify - “with negative idea predominant, to declare guiltless one accused or who may be accused , acquit of a charge or reproach” (Thayer, p. 150). Neighbor - “according to the teaching of Christ, any other man irrespective of race or religion with whom we live or whom we chance to meet (which idea is clearly brought out in the parable Lk. 10:25-37)” (Thayer, p. 519).

9 Reason For The Parable Is Open To Opportunity
"LIKE A GOOD NEIGHBOR" Reason For The Parable Is Open To Opportunity

10 Is Open To Opportunity 1) Notice the religious leaders of that day.
“Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side” (Luke 10:31,32). 2) The Samaritan. “But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion” (Luke 10:33).

11 Is Open To Opportunity 3) Opportunity – means – responsibility.
“Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10). 4) How many of your neighbors are in need? “Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!” (John 4:35).

12 Reason For The Parable Is Open To Opportunity Is Compassionate
"LIKE A GOOD NEIGHBOR" Reason For The Parable Is Open To Opportunity Is Compassionate

13 Is Compassionate 1) The attitude manifested by the Samaritan.
“But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion” (Luke 10:33). 2) The example set by Jesus. “And when Jesus went out He saw a great multitude; and He was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick” (Matthew 14:14).

14 Is Compassionate 3) We need to feel the pain of others.
“Then, when Mary came where Jesus was, and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” Therefore, when Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, He groaned in the spirit and was troubled. And He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.” Jesus wept” (John 11:32-35).

15 Is Compassionate 4) We need compassion beyond just physical ills.
“Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest” (Matthew 9:35-38).

16 Reason For The Parable Is Open To Opportunity Is Compassionate
"LIKE A GOOD NEIGHBOR" Reason For The Parable Is Open To Opportunity Is Compassionate Gets Involved

17 Gets Involved 1) The Samaritan involved himself.
“So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you” (Luke 10:34,35).

18 Gets Involved 2) Compassion is more than pity.
“the feeling for another’s sorrow or hardship that leads to help” (World Book Dictionary, p. 422). “My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth” (1 John 3:18).

19 Gets Involved 3) An example of one getting involved.
“At Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which is translated Dorcas. This woman was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did. But it happened in those days that she became sick and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. And since Lydda was near Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to him, imploring him not to delay in coming to them. Then Peter arose and went with them. When he had come, they brought him to the upper room. And all the widows stood by him weeping, showing the tunics and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them” (Acts 9:36-39).

20 Reason For The Parable Is Open To Opportunity Is Compassionate
"LIKE A GOOD NEIGHBOR" Reason For The Parable Is Open To Opportunity Is Compassionate Gets Involved Is Generous

21 Is Generous 1) Notice the expense the Samaritan went to.

22 Is Generous 2) Barnabas was such a man. 3) God is generous!!!
“And Joses, who was also named Barnabas by the apostles (which is translated Son of Encouragement), a Levite of the country of Cyprus, having land, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet” (Acts 4:36,37). 3) God is generous!!! (a) He gives us the sunshine, rain, fruitful seasons, help in time of trouble and the greatest gift, is His Son.
