1 Characteristics of a parable with the example of The Good Samaritan
WHAT IS A PARABLE? Characteristics of a parable with the example of The Good Samaritan

2 Learning goals Understand the 5 categories of a parable
Understand the story of The Good Samaritan Have the ability to dissect any parable in the bible, into the 5 categories of a parable.

3 The good Samaritan (luke 10:30-35)
We will be looking at the story of The Good Samaritan and dissecting it into the categories of a parable. Lets have a look at the story of the Good Samaritan

4 What is a Parable A parable is a story… The Good Samaritan
Parables are stories, often about ordinary events of day- to-day life. They are about people losing a coin, being hired to work, finding treasures, sowing seed, and squandering their inheritance. Jesus' parables were based on daily life among his own people. This is a story of a traveller between Jerusalem and Jericho who falls into the hands of robbers, is severely wounded and receives help from a Samaritan

5 What is a parable? THE GOOD SAMARITAN A PARABLE IS A COMPARISON
A parable compares something we don't know (like the kingdom of God) with something we do know (events from everyday life). Jesus makes some surprising, even daring, comparisons. This parable compares the Kingdom of God with the story of the man wounded by robbers who is lying in the ditch

6 A PARABLE CONTAINS A CRISIS
WHAT IS A PARABLE? A PARABLE CONTAINS A CRISIS THE GOOD SAMARITAN All good stories have a beginning, a crisis and a resolution. So do parables. The crisis of the parable is the most interesting part. Sometimes the crisis is very gentle; other stories take a strange turn. Our expectations of what is normal are challenged, overturned, or fulfilled in an unusual way. In this sense, parables are like metaphors. The wounded man expects to be helped by the priest and the Levite, who are, after all, fellow Jews and religious people. But they both pass by on the other side of the road to avoid any contact. Help does not come from those we might expect it from.

7 What is a parable? A PARABLE HAS AN ENDING THE GOOD SAMARITAN
Some endings are happy and others are tragic. A Samaritan, who would normally not be expected to help a Jew because of their religious biases against each other, arrives on the scene and goes far out of his way to help, bandaging his wounds, putting him on his animal, and bringing him to an inn. He even promises to come by on his return and pay any additional expenses. Imagine doing that for someone who would normally be considered an enemy.
