3 The history of Olympic games
There are many myths surrounding the ancient Olympic Games. The most popular legend describes that Heracles was the creator of the Olympic Games, and built the Olympic stadium. According to that legend he walked in a straight line for 400 meters and called this distance a "stadium”. This is also why a modern stadium is meters.

4 The first Olympic Games
The first Olympic Games were the 1896 Summer Olympics, held in Athens, Greece. The total number of athletes at the first Olympic Games was less than 250. Paris was also the first Olympic Games where women were allowed to compete.

5 Olympic symbols The best known symbol is probably that of the Olympic Rings. These five intertwined rings represent the unity of five continents. They appear in five colours. These colours are white, red, blue, green, yellow, and black.

7 It plays an important role in the opening ceremonies.
The Olympic Flame is one of important Olympic symbols. It plays an important role in the opening ceremonies.

8 It has played an important part of the games since 1980 with the debut of Misha, a Russian bear.

9 Olympic sports The Olympic program consists of 35 different sports,more than 400 events. The Summer Olympics includes 28 sports with 38 disciplines and the Winter Olympics includes 7 sports with 15 disciplines.Nine sports were on the original Olympic programme in 1896: athletics, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, weightlifting, shooting, swimming, tennis, and wrestling.
