1 Haddonfield Public Schools
Bloodborne Pathogens Haddonfield Public Schools Presented by Haddonfield School Nurses Sharon Garnier, RN Loretta Macconi, RN Beth Herrera, RN Peggy Petrillo, RN Laurie Lipiecki, RN Special Thanks to Madeline Mills, RN Woodbury Public Schools

2 BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS THE FOLLOWING IS AN ANNUAL REQUIREMENT OF OSHA FOR ALL EMPLOYEES PLEASE REMEMBER TO SIGN THE ATTACHED FORM AND RETURN IT TO YOUR SCHOOL NURSE AFTER VIEWING THE SLIDE SHOW.

3 WHAT ARE BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS?
DISEASE CAUSING ORGANISMS THAT ARE TRANSFERRED THROUGH BLOOD TO BLOOD TRANSMISSION HEPATITIS B, HEPATITIS C AND HIV ARE THE MOST COMMON NO SYMPTOMS MAY OCCUR FOR YEARS AFTER EXPOSURE

4 WHY DO WE NEED TO FOCUS ON THIS?
CHILDREN MAY CARRY DISEASES JUST LIKE THE GENERAL PUBLIC OSHA HAS ISSUED A STANDARD THAT CAN PROTECT YOU FROM BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS ON THE JOB SOME SCHOOL EMPLOYEES HAVE A GREATER DEGREE OF RISK

5 AT RISK EMPLOYEES School Nurse/Substitute School Nurse
Athletic Trainers PE Personnel Building Custodians Teachers and/or EA’s responsible for children with potential aggressive tendencies EA’s with playground responsibilities

6 LET’S GET MORE SPECIFIC
3 MOST COMMON BLOODBORNE INFECTIONS ARE: HEPATITIS B, MOST COMMON BBP HEPATITIS C HIV

7 HEPATITIS B VIRAL DISEASE THAT CAUSES LIVER INFLAMMATION
50% OF THOSE INFECTED HAVE SYMPTOMS (FLU LIKE SYMPTOMS, JAUNDICE); 50% HAVE NO SYMPTOMS 10% END UP WITH CHRONIC LIVER DAMAGE WHICH CAN BE LIFE THREATENING A RELIABLE VACCINE IS AVAILABLE

8 HEPATITIS B VACCINE Offered at no charge for employees identified by the district as having a higher risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. See your school nurse for more information.

9 HEPATITIS C VIRAL DISEASE THAT CAUSES INFLAMMATION OF THE LIVER
MOST PEOPLE DON’T FEEL ILL AFTER INITIALLY INFECTED 85% GO ON TO DEVELOP CHRONIC INFECTION LEADING TO LIVER DISEASE THERE IS NO CURE OR VACCINE PRESENTLY BUT MEDICATIONS AVAILABLE MAY ARREST IT.

10 HIV HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS
ATTACKS THE BODY’S IMMUNE SYSTEM OVER A PERIOD OF TIME MANY DEVELOP AIDS - DEATH OCCURS FROM INFECTION OR CANCERS MEDICATION REGIMES HAVE PROLONGED LIFE BUT THERE IS NO CURE OR VACCINE YET

11 TIME OUT!!! SHOULD WE PANIC?….NO! RISK OF EXPOSURE IS LOW IN
THE SCHOOL SETTING PREVENTION IS THE BEST POLICY

12 EXACTLY HOW ARE BBP’S TRANSMITTED?
BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS ARE TRANSMITTED MOST EASILY THROUGH DIRECT CONTACT WITH INFECTED BLOOD THEY CAN ALSO SPREAD THROUGH SEMEN, VAGINAL SECRETIONS, OR OTHER TISSUES CONTAINING VISIBLE BLOOD

13 TRANSMISSION OVERALL UNPROTECTED SEX WITH AN INFECTED PERSON
SHARING NEEDLES FOR ILLICIT DRUG USE INFECTED MOTHER TO UNBORN CHILD BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS PRIOR TO 1982

14 TRANSMISSION IN SCHOOLS
BROKEN SKIN OR MUCOUS MEMBRANES COME IN CONTACT WITH INFECTED BLOOD OR BODY FLUID WITH VISIBLE BLOOD ACCIDENTAL INJURY WITH AN INFECTED SHARP OBJECT

15 PREVENTION IS KEY UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS-TREAT ALL BLOOD AND BODY FLUIDS CONTAINING VISIBLE BLOOD AS IF CONTAMINATED WITH BBP’S ALWAYS USE BARRIER PROTECTION/PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPEMENT (PPE), SUCH AS GLOVES WHEN YOU ANTICIPATE TOUCHING BLOOD, BODY FLUIDS OR CONTAMINATED SURFACES CERTAIN SITUATIONS MAY WARRANT ADDITIONAL PPE, SUCH AS GOWNS, MASKS, EYE PROTECTION, ETC.

16 PREVENTION IS KEY WASH HANDS AND SKIN SURFACES IMMEDIATELY AFTER CONTACT WITH BLOOD OR BODY FLUIDS DISINFECT ANY CONTAMINATED SURFACES AND EQUIPMENT WITH APPROVED SOLUTION AND PROCEDURES (1/4 CUP BLEACH TO 1 GALLON WATER) ALONE, NONE OF THESE APPROACHES IS 100% EFFECTIVE. THEY MUST BE USED TOGETHER TO PROTECT YOU FROM HEPATITIS B AND HIV

17 …PREVENTION IS KEY... PICK UP BROKEN GLASS, SHARPS WITH A BROOM, TONGS ETC. ALWAYS USE BARRIER EQUIPMENT IF YOU HAVE TO RESUSCITATE A VICTIM (FOR THOSE WHO ARE CPR TRAINED)

18 HANDLING SITUATIONS … USE UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS FOR ALL FIRST AID EMERGENCIES ALL STAFF SHOULD HAVE QUICK ACCESS TO GLOVES ALLOW A BLEEDING VICTIM TO TREAT SELF WITH PRESSURE, IF APPROPRIATE

19 VICTIM SHOULD GO TO NURSE OR NURSE IS NOTIFIED TO GO TO THE VICTIM
NOTIFY CUSTODIAN FOR CLEANUP WITH DISINFECTANT USING GLOVES, STORE ALL CONTAMINATED CLOTHING, EQUIPMENT IN A PLASTIC BAG

20 REMOVING GLOVES WITH BOTH HANDS GLOVED, PEEL ONE GLOVE OFF FROM TOP TO BOTTOM AND HOLD IT IN THE GLOVED HAND. WITH THE EXPOSED HAND, PEEL THE SECOND GLOVE FROM THE INSIDE, TUCKING THE FIRST GLOVE INSIDE THE SECOND. DISPOSE OF THE ENTIRE BUNDLE PROMPTLY. NEVER TOUCH THE OUTSIDE OF THE GLOVE WITH BARE SKIN. USING SOAP AND WATER, WASH HANDS.

21 OK, WHAT IF EXPOSURE OCCURS?
FROM INJURIES, BITES, SHARPS, BLOODY BODY FLUIDS

22 IF EXPOSED TO BLOOD OR CONTAMINATED BODY FLUIDS...
COPIOUSLY WASH AFFECTED AREA WITH SOAP AND WARM WATER. FLUSH EYES COPIOUSLY WITH WARM WATER IF EXPOSED REPORT THE EXPOSURE TO THE NURSE OR SUPERVISOR IMMEDIATELY YOUR EMPLOYER SHOULD MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR MEDICAL FOLLOW-UP, AS NEEDED AN EXPOSURE CONTROL PLAN IS IN PLACE

23 EXPOSURE CONTROL PLAN (ECP)
THE PLAN SERVES AS AN EMPLOYER COMPLIANCE GUIDE TO THE OSHA BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS STANDARD. IT IDENTIFIES THE PERSONNEL AT GREATEST RISK FOR EXPOSURE. IT ANALYZES THE POTENTIAL HAZARDS OF EACH JOB DESCRIPTION. IT DETERMINES WHAT MEASURES WILL BE TAKEN TO REDUCE THE RISK OF EXPOSURE TO BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS ON THE JOB. CONTACT YOUR ADMINISTRATOR TO REVIEW PLAN OR OBTAIN A COPY.

24 SIGNS AND LABELS WATCH FOR THE BIOHAZARD SYMBOL. THIS SYMBOL WILL WARN YOU WHEN THE CONTENTS OF CONTAINERS USED FOR WASTE, STORAGE OR SHIPPING CONTAIN BLOOD OR OTHER POTENTIALLY INFECTIOUS MATERIALS.

25 REMEMBER... MOST SCHOOL EMPLOYEES ARE NOT AT A HIGH RISK FOR EXPOSURE
MOST EXPOSURES DO NOT RESULT IN INFECTION WASHING HANDS IS THE BEST PREVENTION

26 REMEMBER TO SIGN AND HAND IN YOUR FORM.
QUESTIONS? SEE YOUR NURSE. REMEMBER TO SIGN AND HAND IN YOUR FORM. THANKS!!
