5 Preliminary Design Based on the Decision Analysis created, Splat 3 determined the best design to complete this project is as follows:

10 Evaluation of Requirements
Accommodation of at least one payload - Splat 3 plans to accommodate 2 payloads Consistently deploy the Payload with no extra momentum - Team plans to deploy payload through a trap door and payload to experience free falling force. Deployment shall be operated from the ground. - The use of remote controls are planned to meet this requirement Operated at varying heights between 10 & 400 feet - The use of an electric winch is planned to be used to fulfill this requirement Height control mechanism - The electric winch has remote control that can be used to vary height Interfaces shall be one fault tolerant BDRS: Will be grounded by an additional paracord rope. PADS: Payload deployment system will be attached to balloon in two separate ways.

Indicator present to display the failure between the Balloon and PADS - The group plans to use a personal alarm device that will sound when a pin is pulled Designed to not allow an early release of the payload - Splat 3 will ensure that payloads are released only when intended by the signals of the controllers Personnel shall not be harmed in the event of a balloon failure - It is the top priority of this group that this project, and all those associated with it remain safe throughout all phases. Abide by the FAA tethered balloon regulations - Before each test, all required FAA regulations will be known and taken care of PADS shall not impact the ground with a velocity higher than 3 m/sec - The PADS will be equipped with a parachute to slow down the PADS in the case of an incident Balloon ascent and descent shall be automated - The BDRS will be automated through the use of an electric winch System shall be powered by no more than one standard power outlet - Electric winch uses 12 volt DC power, will need AC/DC converter to use with 120V AC power

12 Evaluation of Requirements
SPLAT shall accommodate two GoPro cameras - Accommodations of the PADS will include a GoPro camera as well as one on the ground The PADS shall have a minimum volume of a 10 ream box of paper - The proposed PADS has a volume larger than this: 30” X 12” X 15” The PADS and the balloon tether shall have a maximum weight of 8 lbs - This maximum weight has been a leading constraint for the purposed designs. Splat 3 will consider weight in every material used in this project. Current weight approximations are under this constraint SPLAT shall be designed to be reused 20 times per day & 5 year lifespan with 5 daily uses per year - Reliability and durability will be ensured in the final project. This will be accomplished through many test before the project is presented. Each SPLAT shall be designed to accommodate the following Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) - Splat 3 will work within the guidelines with any equipment that is given. The SPLAT shall be able to deploy to 400 feet ten times in one hour of use -The balloon can be deployed and retrieved 10 times in 64 minutes. This is by using a wench that retrieves the balloon from 400 feet in 6.15 minutes. The height of the system shall be known to within one foot - Using a line counter the length of line out to the balloon will be known accurately, the total height will be close to this
