2 Epic Poetry Long narrative poems that tell of the adventures of heroes who in some way embody the values of their civilization. Rhapsodes “singers of tales” were the historians and entertainers as well as the mythmakers of their time

3 Characteristics of an epic
Setting is huge Begins with an invocation-the poet/narrator starts the poem by stating the tale’s subject and asking for poetic inspiration from a guiding spirit Contains an epic hero Epic begins “in the middle of things” Includes speeches by principal characters

4 Characteristics of an Epic cont.
Narrative’s tone and style are formal rather than conversational. The use of figurative language makes the narrative vivid and exciting for listeners and readers. The speaker is a narrator, telling a story. The theme or subject is important. Main character, who is, or is capable of being, a hero.

5 Epic hero has a goal and has embarked upon a long journey.
Gods or supernatural beings take a part, or an interest, in the action.

6 Myths Traditional stories, rooted in a particular culture, that usually explain a belief, a ritual, or a mysterious natural phenomenon. Are essentially religious because they are concerned with the relationship between human beings and the unknown or spiritual realm

The Odyssey-epic of the long journey Purposes of an Epic To entertain To teach and inspire the listener or reader with examples of how people can strive and succeed against great odds.
