1 Synergize Habit Six Day One
“Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much” Helen Keller 5/8/2018

2 Memory Game I will put up a slide with several pictures for 30 seconds. You may only use your eyes during this time. After the 30 seconds is up you will write down as many items as you can remember.

4 Individual vs. Team Discuss the differences

5 Why do geese fly in formation? (Read pages 182-183 to find out!)

6 What Does Synergize Mean?
“Synergy is achieved when two or more people work together to create a better solution than either could alone. It’s not your way or my way, but a better way, a higher way” (Covey) 5/8/2018

7 Synergy is: Synergy is not:
Check out what Synergy is and is not, then watch a skit to see the differences! Synergy is: Celebrating differences Teamwork Open-Mindedness Finding new and better ways Synergy is not: Tolerating differences Working independently Thinking you’re always right Compromise 5/8/2018

10 Diversity Diversity means differences. We typically think of diversity in terms of race and gender, but it also includes physical features, dress, language, wealth, family, religious beliefs, lifestyle, education, interests, age, skills, style…. and the list goes on! 5/8/2018

11 Diversity is Inevitable
We are all different, and people approach those differences in three ways: Level 1: Shun diversity Level 2: Tolerate diversity Level 3: Celebrate diversity (read the profiles of each on pages 184 – 185). 5/8/2018

12 We Are All a Minority of One
We clearly see how we are different from each other on the outside, but we are also different on the inside. 5/8/2018

13 We Learn Differently (People learn best through their dominant intelligence, which is yours?)
Linguistic – learn through reading, writing, telling stories. Logical-Mathematical – learn through logic, patterns, categories, relationships. Bodily-Kinesthetic – learn through bodily sensations, touching. Spatial – learn through images and pictures. Musical – learn through sound and rhythm. Interpersonal – learn through interaction and communication with others. Intrapersonal – learn through their own feelings. 5/8/2018

14 We See Differently How many of you see a beautiful woman?
How many of you see an old woman? 5/8/2018

15 We have different styles, traits, and characteristics
What kind of fruit are you? Using the “How Am I Different” worksheet, read across each row and place a “4” in the blank that best describes you, a “3” in the blank that second best describes you, a “2” in the blank that third best describes you, and a “1” in the blank that does not describe you. Do this for all five rows, then work down and add each column. In what column was your highest score? What kind of fruit are you? (As a class, raise hands for each fruit and read about that fruit on pages 188 and 189.) Is one fruit better than another? Remember, a fruit salad tastes best when each fruit maintains its own unique flavor! 5/8/2018

16 Celebrating diversity is a wonderful thing, but unfortunately there are roadblocks that prevent synergy from occurring. Ignorance: Not knowing how other people think, what they believe or how they feel. Cliques: Wanting to be with those you’re comfortable with, which isn’t wrong, but it becomes a problem when that group becomes exclusive and rejects others. Prejudice: Not treating people fairly, which includes stereotyping, labeling, or prejudging others because they differ from your own circumstances. Read about each of these roadblocks on pages 5/8/2018

17 Sticking Up For Diversity
We must show courage and stick up for diversity! Read page 193 to find out about a girl who really challenged her classmates to stand up. Talk about synergy! Here we have a father/son team which you must see to appreciate: 5/8/2018

18 Getting To Synergy The Action Plan
1. Define the problem or opportunity 2. Their way (Seek first to understand the ideas of others, listen!) 3. My way (Seek to be understood by sharing your ideas.) 4. Brainstorm (Create new options and ideas) 5. High Way (Find the best solution.) 5/8/2018

19 Let’s Practice “The Vacation” (Three students to read script)
Dad: I don’t care how you feel. You’re going on this vacation whether you like it or not. We’ve had this planned for months, and it’s important that we spend some time together as a family. You: But I don’t want to go. I want to be with my friends. I’ll miss out on everything. Mom: I don’t want you staying here by yourself. I’d worry the whole time and it would ruin my vacation. We want you with us. 5/8/2018

20 Define the Problem/Opportunity
You: My parents want me to vacation with the family, but I would rather stay home and go out with my friends. 5/8/2018

21 Their Way (Seek first to understand the ideas of others)
You: This vacation is very important to my dad. He wants to have a family bonding time. He feels it won’t be the same without me. Mom feels that they would worry so much about me being home alone that they wouldn’t enjoy the vacation. 5/8/2018

22 My Way (Seek to be understood by sharing your ideas)
You: Mom and Dad, I want to stay home and be with my friends. They are very important to me. We have a lot of things planned, and I don’t want to miss out on any of the fun. Besides, I go crazy when I have to drive in a crowded car all day with my little brother and sister. 5/8/2018

23 Brainstorm (Create new options and ideas)
Dad: We could go to a vacation spot that you enjoy more. You: I could stay with relatives close by. Mom: You could bring a friend with you. You: I could use my savings and bus out to meet you so I wouldn’t have to drive in a crowded car. Mom: We could cut the vacation short so you would have more time with friends. You: I could stay home for part of the vacation and join you later. Dad: You can stay home if you agree to paint the fence while we are gone. 5/8/2018

24 Remember, brainstorming is where the magic happens!
Get creative: Throw out your wildest ideas. Let if flow. Avoid criticism: Nothing kills the flow of creativity like criticism. Piggyback: Keep building upon the best ideas. One great idea often leads to another. 5/8/2018

25 High Way (Find the best solution)
After brainstorming for a while, the best idea will usually surface. You: We all agreed that I could stay home during the first half of the week with a relative, and then bus out with a friend to join the family for the second half. They even offered to pay the bus fare for my friend and me if I would paint the fence. It’s not hard work, so I will still have time to hang out with my friends. They’re happy, and so am I. 5/8/2018

26 Your Turn (Find a partner and practice the Action Plan)
If you could go anywhere on a week long vacation, where would you go? The vacation fairy has just granted you a vacation! There are some strings attached though….. You must go with your partner, who has also been given a vacation. (You have to stay together.) You both must be back in one week. You only have one round trip plane ticket each. 5/8/2018

27 Teamwork and Synergy The wonderful by-product of teamwork and synergy is that it builds relationships. Basketball Olympian Deborah Miller Palmore said, “Even when you’ve played the game of your life, it’s the feeling of teamwork that you’ll remember. You’ll forget the plays, the shots, and the scores, but you’ll never forget your teammates.” 5/8/2018
