Born October 1, 1924 in Plains, Georgia. His father was a leading citizen and his mother instilled in her son an enlightened view of race. Education: Georgia Southwestern College (Americus) Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta) U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis, MD) Early Life: Married Rosalynn Carter and had three children. Resigned from his naval commission to return to Plains to revive his family’s peanut warehouse

Devoted time to educational affairs Promoted efficiency and educational opportunity through reorganizing and merging schools at the local and state levels.

4 Governor of Georgia: Reformed the state government to operate more efficiently. Responsive to needs of citizens. Reformed budget to reduce costs Upgraded weak educational system by supporting vocational education, reducing class sizes, equalize funding. Supported preschool education and adopted a statewide kindergarten program Reformed criminal justice system Promoted civil rights and equal opportunities for women and minorities No poor, rural, weak, or black person should ever have to bear the additional burden of being

Emphasized high moral standards, ethical behavior, and democratic principles. Created Education and Energy Departments , developed a national energy policy and deregulated the trucking and airline industries. Sensitive to conservation and environmental concerns. Established human rights as an essential component of policy. Opened diplomatic relations with China, negotiated Panama Canal Treaties, Camp David Accords (Israel/Egypt)

6 problems president Carter faced
Oil crisis (OPEC reduced production and increased prices which created shortages.) Escalating food & healthcare costs. Stagnant (unmoving) economy & high unemployment. Seizure of the U.S. embassy in Iran Soviet Union invades Afghanistan Due to national and international issues, Carter’s presidency was not considered super successful and he was not elected for a second term.
