2 How it works Starts with a virtual design of the object. CAD (Computer Aided Design) 3D scanners Slicing: Dividing a 3D model into hundreds or thousands of horizontal layers On average: .1mm thick Additive Manufacturing Materials used to print: Thermoplastic Glass filled polyamide Silver Steel Wax

3 Guns The Liberator: First 3D printed handgun(2013)
Printed with thermoplastic A mechanism such as a gun is extremely complex for a 3D printer Printed individual parts at a time, then later assembled Making 3D printed guns very time consuming and very difficult 15 out of the 16 functional parts are made from plastic Small nail was the only metal piece, used as the firing pin Plastic ammunition, though it is not nearly as effective Expensive

4 Ammunition -There has been progress in the printing of bullets for the Liberator. With the majority of the bullet made from plastic and a small metal ball to add some weight. At a range of feet penetrated all the way through a water jug. Though with no particular accuracy $11,000 and 1 month to manufacture

6 Future The Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine prints ear, nose and bone scaffolds that can be coated with cells to grow body parts Create complex geometry parts not possible with traditional manufacturing Faster product development cycle with rapid prototyping, form and fit testing Possibilities for 3D printing in space

8 3D Printed Weapons What is the material used to print the gun?
Johnny Droege What is the material used to print the gun? Ammunition? -There has been progress in the printing of bullets for the Liberator. With the majority of the bullet made from plastic and a small metal ball to add some weight. At a range of feet penetrated all the way through a water jug. Though with no particular accuracy. -Using the process of additive manufacturing, the 3D printer is able to print out piece by piece a fully functioning handgun. Called the Liberator. Fifteen out of the sixteen parts are printed with thermoplastic. Only the firing pin is a metal nail. How does the plastic handle the ammunitions explosive round when fired? -Before finishing the assembly of the 3D printed gun, the barrel of the gun is coated with acetone. This helps suppress the heat and the combustion of the ammunition. Greatly reduces the friction created, therefore does not crack or break the plastic itself. The program for a 3D printer to print a gun or more specifically the Liberator, is illegal and there were only a certain number of copies of the program before the defense department shut it down and confiscated it.
