5 Examples: Student Competencies*
Demonstrate basic knowledge of the complex factors involved in behavioral change. Develop diagnostic and treatment plans in partnership with the patient and the patient's family. Integrate principle of community medicine, and the population factors of heritage, environment, and disease prevalence into a patient's care. *From MCW Family Medicine, 3rd year Clerkship

Vetted and agreed-upon preceptor abilities / behaviors Aggregate description of a “good preceptor” Guide teachers who wish to examine / expand approaches Positively influence learner experiences What this is NOT: not a mandate, not a standard, not an external assessment Now – in early stage, asking you to be part of “exploring, editing, seeking consensus” on preceptor competencies.

7 Working DRAFT of Five Preceptor Competencies*
Demonstrate a commitment to learner’s (and patient’s) success and well-being leading to learners’ growth into their professional roles. Flexibly tailor teaching and communication styles to facilitate patient care and learning. Demonstrate best educational and evidence-based practices and role model those behaviors for learners. Role model continuous self-assessment and lifelong learning. Provide appropriate feedback to the student and assessment reports to the medical school. *Each competency has three-to-six “observable behaviors” – see worksheet

8 Help Review Competencies!
In assigned groups, review ONE of the five competencies and related, “observable” behaviors. Example, a row like this, with white space for edits: Review + give feedback on “clarity” and “what should be changed or added”. You have ___ minutes! Each group: report “one finding” from discussion; Turn in worksheet. DOMAIN COMPETENCY OBSERVABLE BEHAVIORS (A well-rounded preceptor will…) Patient & Learner Centeredness 1. Demonstrate a commitment to learner’s (and patient’s) success and well-being leading to learners’ growth in their professional roles. Prepare the clinical environment for the learner Orient the learner to the clinical environment Ascertain each learner’s knowledge, skills and attitudes related to rotation expectations and the clinic population Demonstrate awareness and sensitivity to patient and learner’s cultural context Help learners develop learning goals aligned with patients’ needs
