Dean’s Freshman Research & Creative Scholars
2016 Fall Reception
2
“With professor McGue, I got the opportunity to write a research paper using real longitudinal data from the MCTFR. I wrote my paper on the social outcomes of a childhood diagnosis of ADHD, with educational attainment being my main interest in the results. After being involved with research freshman year, I was inspired to keep on track with research in my own major department, Child Psychology. Today, I am currently part of the Gunnar Lab in the Institute of Child Development. This new position wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for my experience in the Dean's Freshman Research and Creative Scholars program.” Garrett Schwartz Participant Worked with Professor Matthew McGue in the Minnesota Center for Twin and Family Research in the Psychology Department

Professor David Feinberg
“This is the [eighth] year I have participated in the Freshmen Research and Creative Awards Program working with two students each year. It has been a highly beneficial experience for both the students and myself. The students have creatively worked on artworks, video documentaries, and have interviewed genocide survivors, abstracting their stories into powerful text.” Professor David Feinberg Department of Art

“I am so grateful to have been given this opportunity…I had no idea that one semester would have such an impact on my life; but my freshman year, I was a sponge. Soaking up lessons from a new environment, new relationships, and new academic topics. My attitude about art history, the business of art, and my personal work is forever changed because of this research project. I can’t un-learn the knowledge that I’ve acquired, and I plan on living out the rest of my creative life with respect to those of the Feminist Art Movement of 1970.” Madison Sternig Participant Worked with Howard Oransky, Director of the Katherine E. Nash Gallery in the Regis Center for Art

“The Freshman Research and Creative Awards Program is one of the most influential experiences I've had at the U of M. Not only did it solidify my desire to declare a major in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences, it set me up to participate in research for the rest of my undergraduate career, and gave me a great mentor in the process. I have had the opportunity to work with Dr. Munson on three different projects, including a large NIH-funded study examining language acquisition, which has led to the writing of my Honors thesis. Without this program, I'm not sure that I ever would have participated in undergraduate research, and I would have missed out on many wonderful opportunities!” Alisha Blackman Participant Worked with Professor Ben Munson in the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences
