Day 1 Bell Work: This class is called PHYSICAL SCIENCE. What do you expect from a class with this title? (Answer in complete sentences!) Agenda: Introductions Class Expectations Science Safety
3
BLAM! Bell work Language And Mathematics
Explain that we’ll be reviewing for the NeSA-S, doing Mathematics Boosters, and learning Greek and Latin roots this year. The BLAM books for each unit provide space to write out answers and will be used for review.

Crickets chirp faster when it’s warmer.
Q: A student noticed that sometimes the chirping sound of a cricket is faster than other times. Which statement is a testable hypothesis? All crickets are black. Crickets are annoying. Crickets chirp faster when it’s warmer. You can buy crickets as reptile food in pet stores. SC a DOK1
5
Mathematics Booster Find the average daily high in Omaha, NE for the week of June 1 – 7, June 1: 25.4oC June 5: 26.7oC June 2: 25.2oC June 6: 28.1oC June 3: 26.4oC June 7: 28.4oC June 4: 25.9oC Point out the area for showing their work and for their answers. Also have students reflect upon their correctness and what they can do in the future when facing a similar problem.
6
Why Study Greek and Latin Roots?
90% of English words are Latin based 75% of Spanish words are Latin based A single Latin root is a part of English words Latin curro = “to run” This year we’ll study Greek and Latin roots that relate to physical science. Doing so will help students in this class but will also boost vocabulary and literacy skills for other classes, too. Information from Greek and Latin Roots - Keys to Building Vocabulary (Rasinski, Pada, Newton, Newton) course current occur cursive cursor concur accurate incur

holds up the entire word
Three Kinds of Roots Prefix – appears at the beginning Base – the middle part Suffix – the end Suffix BASE The BASE holds up the entire word This year we’ll study Greek and Latin roots that relate to physical science. Doing so will help students in this class but will also boost vocabulary and literacy skills for other classes, too. Information from Greek and Latin Roots - Keys to Building Vocabulary (Rasinski, Pada, Newton, Newton) Prefix ROOT – any part of a word that “holds meaning”
8
Greek and Latin Roots Greek and Latin Meaning sci- know nota
mark, note, sign centi- one hundred milli- a thousand thesis put, place; a proposition Have students write the meaning of each root in the appropriate spot in their BLAM books. We’ll work with this set of roots, using strategies from Marzano’s Six Step Vocabulary, for two weeks. Then we’ll have another set of roots.
9
Today’s Objectives I will know what is expected of me in this class.
I will be able to identify correct lab safety procedures.

Bell Work Answer Bell Work: This class is called PHYSICAL SCIENCE. What do you expect from a class with this title? (Answer in complete sentences!)
11
A: A student noticed that sometimes the chirping sound of a cricket is faster than other times. Which statement is a testable hypothesis? All crickets are black. – Incorrect. There is not a cause and effect relationship to be tested. Crickets are annoying. – Incorrect. This is an opinion. Crickets chirp faster when it’s warmer. – Correct. This is testable and can be supported with evidence. You can buy crickets as reptile food in pet stores. – This may be true, but there is not a cause and effect relationship to be tested. SC a DOK1

Mathematics Booster Find the average daily high in Omaha, NE for the week of June 1 – 7, 2015. = 186.1 186.1 divided by 7 = The average high temperature For the week of June 1-7 is 26.6oC Mention significant figures and rounding.

What is Physical Science?
Physical science focuses on nonliving things. Matter and Energy A very small amount of the universe is matter. All matter that you are familiar with is made up of building blocks called atoms that combine in chemical reactions. Explain that this class is broken into four units. These units will incorporate aspects of chemistry, physics, earth science, and astronomy. Our Physical Science class is divided into four units.
14
Force and Motion Forces cause changes in motion. The laws of physics allow these changes to be calculated exactly. Energy Energy exists in many forms. Energy can be transferred from one form or object to another, but it can never be destroyed.
15
Earth and Space Our planet is a complex structure that is constantly changing. It is also only a small piece of a very large, very old universe.
16
Science Safety What science safety equipment is located in this room?
Working with your desk partner, read rule #20 on the Science Safety Contract. Discuss why this rule will be different in each classroom. Distribute the science safety contracts. Discuss the importance of safety within a science classroom. Point out the important safety equipment in the classroom.
17
As a Group Begin the Critical Thinking and Application worksheet
18
Independently Working independently, complete the Critical Thinking and Applications worksheet. Read through the entire Science Safety Contract. Fill out the bottom portion and return it next class. Distribute the Critical Thinking and Applications worksheets and give students time to work on these. Stress the importance of returning the safety contract. Students will not be able to participate in labs without this completed contract.
19
Homework Bring back signed science safety contract NEXT class!
Finish Critical Thinking & Applications activity for science safety contract
20
Exit Slip Why are laboratory safety rules so important in a physical science classroom?
