1 Measurements of NMHCs, Halocarbons, and Light Alkyl Nitrates During TOPSE
Nicola J Blake, Donald R Blake, Barkley C Sive, Aaron S Katzenstein, Simone Meinardi, Oliver W Wingenter University of California, Irvine

2 What is the composition and seasonal evolution of volatile organic carbon (VOC) species in the northern mid-latitudes, and what is their significance to a springtime ozone maximum?

3 Experimental Sampling Analysis
Air collected in electropolished 2-L ss canisters canisters, pressurized with MB pump - up to 96 samples/flight Analysis GC with FID, ECD, and MS detection. Samples pre-concentrated with L.N2 analyzed by a three-GC, five-column, five-detector analytical system. Each sample analyzed for C2-C10 NMHCs, halocarbons, C1-C4 alkyl nitrates (RONO2), and DMS.

4 Median Latitude Profiles Early Feb to mid May Altitudes 1-6 km

5 Flight 22 Thule to Churchill March 24, 2000

6 Median Latitude Profiles Early Feb to mid May Altitudes 1-6 km

7 Median Latitude Profiles Early Feb to mid May Altitudes 1-6 km

8 Median Vertical Profiles Early Feb to mid May Latitudes 58°N to 85°N

9 Median Vertical Profiles Early Feb to mid May Latitudes 58°N to 85°N

10 Median Vertical Profiles Early Feb to mid May Latitudes 58°N to 85°N

11 Median Vertical Profiles Early Feb to mid May Latitudes 58°N to 85°N

12 Mid Trop. Trends Early Feb to mid May Median (±1SD) mixing ratios for altitudes 1 to 6 km

13 Mid Trop. Trends Early Feb to Mid May Median (±1SD) mixing ratios for altitudes 1 to 6 km
DRONO2 ≈ 15 pptv ≈4 ppt/month decrease DNOY ≈ 150 pptv ≈40 ppt/month increase

14 Mid Trop Trends Early Feb to Mid May Median (±1SD) mixing ratios for altitudes 1 to 6 km
DO3=16ppb ≈4.2 ppb/month DNMHC=6.2ppbC ≈1.6 ppbC/month

15 Summary Strong vertical, latitudinal, and temporal gradients for NMHCs
Evidence of long-range transport. North of 58°, NMHCs decreased from their wintertime maximum at ~ 1.6 ppbC/month (compared with O3 increase of ~ 4.2 ppbv/month) Light alkyl nitrates ~10% of NOY or less and decreased ~4 ppt/month
