1 Use Medians and Altitudes
Chapter 5.4

2 What is a median? A median is a line that connects a midpoint with a vertex in a triangle. If you draw all 3 medians, they will intersect at a point called the centroid. midpoint centroid vertex

3 Another Special Relationship

4 Assume Q is a centroid, what are the lengths of QW and SW?
6

5 Assume Q is a centroid. How many sides can you figure out?
SW =18 7 15 10

6 Graphing medians and centroids
Recall that the midpoint formula is: Find the midpoint of each side of the triangle and connect the midpoint to the opposite vertex. The centroid will be the point of intersection.

7 What is the coordinate of the centroid?
(4, 8) (8, 4) (2, 0)

8 What is the coordinate of the centroid?
(5, 9) (3, 5) (7, 1)

10 What is an altitude? The altitude of a triangle is really the height.
To find the height, you drop a perpendicular line from a vertex to the opposite side of a triangle. All 3 altitudes intersect at the point of concurrency called the orthocenter.
