Hydro’s new production line for advanced car parts in Germany
Official opening on May 4, with a total 600 invited guests from Germany, Norway and internationally Hydro delivers close to 1 million tonnes of aluminium per year to the automotive industry, of which close to 1/3 is produced in Norway The automotive industry represents the fastest growing segment for aluminium, due to its unique qualities as light, formable, corrosion- resistant and infinitely recyclable While the European car industry uses on average 150 kg aluminium per car*, many advanced car makers use considerably more per model (e.g. BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Porsche, JLR) The move towards lightweighting cars is due to both end-user pull and push from stricter regulations – resulting in more and more car makers becoming part of the “diet car” trend By using aluminium, car makers are also improving the footprint of their vehicles from a life-cycle perspective, as aluminium may be recycled infinitely without degradation and by using only 5 % of the energy necessary to produce it the first time Hydro increases its production capacity of advanced car parts to 200,000 tonnes/year Hydro becomes Europe’s 2nd largest producer in this market, serving Europe’s top car makers Source: Ducker, study on behalf of European Aluminium, September 2016 Watch AL3 buildings rise - on Youtube:
