2 Boer War Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, and others fought for Africa Boer War- in South Africa the Zulu tribe (led by Shaka Zulu) fought the Belgian farmers (Boers) who sought to take their land, once the Belgians had defeated the tribe; GB fought the Belgians for control of South Africa

3 White Man’s Burden Missionaries arrived to convert native Africans- saw them as uncivilized and in need of guidance -paternalistic -“White Man’s Burden” by Kipling Dr. David Livingstone explored the interior of Africa, opposed the slave trade, and spread Christianity, was not heard of for several years, presumed dead Henry Stanley, a journalist, trekked into Africa to find him, “Dr. Livingstone I presume?

5 Conflict in Africa King Leopold II of Belgium sent Stanley and other missionaries to explore the Congo (central Africa.) Britain, France, and Germany fought for claims in the region. ** Belgians committed horrific crimes and violence against the people of the Congo, other Europeans were forced to intervene**

6 Berlin Conference Berlin Conference-1884 European met to divide up Africa to avoid European war NO AFRICANS WERE INVITED **Ethiopia was the only African nation to successfully resist the Europeans- they hired European experts to help modernize his nation and military in order to be able to successfully resist European advancement.
