1 Cold War Spy Craft Espionage

2 Vocabulary for today Nuclear Arms Race H-bomb
MAD – Mutually Assured Destruction CIA KGB GRU

3 Nuclear Arms Race Both the US and USSR believed the more nuclear weapons you had, the more powerful you were. After the Soviets conducted their 1st nuclear test in 1949, both nations started stockpiling weapons.

4 H-Bomb By January 1950, the US started production of the H-bomb. The test in 1952 of the bomb that was smaller than “Little Boy”, was 2500x more powerful. A-bomb – fission – splitting atoms H-bomb – fusion – basically using atom bombs to fuse atoms creating a lot more energy “Ivy Mike”

5 Klaus Fuchs US expected it to take the USSR years to get the h-bomb, but it took less than a year. Klaus Fuchs, a German Communist exile who worked on the Manhattan Project (as a British scientist), confessed to giving the bomb secrets to the Soviets in 1950, showing the NATO countries that spies were living in our midst.

6 Escalation 1961 - Enough nukes to destroy the world
China (communist) exploded an h-bomb **Soviets believed in quantity over quality...so Troops: NATO 2.6 million, Warsaw Pact 4 million Tanks: NATO 13,000, Warsaw Pact 42,500 NATO was outnumbered, but had better quality. MAD - Mutually Assured Destruction ensured that if either side launched, nobody would win.

7 Spy Agencies Spy agencies start collecting foreign intelligence - know what the enemy had in order to be able to compete. CIA - US agency started in1947, had very little government control in keeping America safe thru espionage. GRU - Soviet intelligence, which gathered info on US programs like the atomic bomb. KGB - Largest secret police in the world, more than 500,000 people to gather intel and suppress resistance in USSR.

8 Becoming a Spy Recruitment Training
-College Degree with 3.0 GPA or higher -interest in foreign affairs -foreign languages, criminology, political science, chemistry, geology, knowledge of another culture, science, engineering, technology skills -well rounded What skills would you have that could make a good spy?? Training -4 months in weapons and deadly force training and tactics -9 weeks of specialized training - background checks, polygraphs, and drug tests

9 Blending in… Spying became an integral part of the Cold War. Both sides went out of their way to acquire as much knowledge as they could about each other. While Hollywood has romanticized the whole image of espionage, the real thing is far from romantic. It is a dangerous cat and mouse game that typically results in torture, prison, or execution for the spy if caught by the opposing team. During the Cold War, spies had to prepare themselves for the worst. Their ability to blend with their surroundings was vital to their survival. The USSR and the US spent large amounts of money training, recruiting, outfitting, and deploying spies all around the world. This resulted in many technological innovations, all the way from tiny spy cameras to deadly assassination weapons.

10 Spy Gadgets – Cold War

11

12 A spy could use the friendly gesture of lighting another person's cigarette to covertly drop a pill into the person's drink. To stealthily remove a document from a desk, dot the bottom of a book with a special wax. When the book is lowered on top of the paper, it will affix the paper to the book and allow the spy to remove the paper without attracting attention. To deliver a special liquid, insert a small container in the fold of a wallet. When the wallet is closed and squeezed the liquid would be discharged.

13 Spy Pets

14 Villains Every spy has a “villain” – a target that has information that the spy needs to acquire, or a threat that they need to neutralize James Bond villains reflect the threats and fears that the world has faced over the years, especially during the Cold War.

15 How do Bond Villains Reflect Global Threats?
Dr. No - Stage a personal vendetta against the Americans by using a nuclear radio beam to interfere with their manned missile launch. Goldfinger - Detonate a bomb within Fort Knox, contaminating the gold reserves and causing a financial meltdown in the United States, increasing the value of Goldfinger's own gold in the process. Thunderball - Extort one hundred million pounds from world governments by threatening them with nuclear missiles. You Only Live Twice - Capture American and Soviet spacecraft with the Bird One space capsule and triggering a war between the United States and the Soviet Union on behalf of an undisclosed Asian country. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service - Abduct beautiful women from around the world and use them as pawns to spread a dangerous virus that is capable of destroying crops and livestock unless the United Nations agree to pardon him for his past crimes. Live and Let Die - Distribute colossal supplies of heroin without cost, causing a huge monopoly in the heroin market that will eventually make all other dealers bankrupt. Moonraker - Fire a nerve agent from space, poisoning Earth's atmosphere and killing off the human population. Rebuild humanity in space with carefully selected humans, creating a new master race before returning to repopulate the Earth once the nerve agent is rendered harmless. A View to a Kill - Develop a bomb and activate it under Silicon Valley, triggering an earthquake in California and cause the valley to flood, wiping out his competitors and allowing him to monopolise the microchip market. Casino Royale – Funding terrorists through illegal poker games Quantun of Solace - Create a coup d'etat by selling water back to the Bolivian government at rapidly inflated prices, after creating an artificial drought. Skyfall - Cyberterrorism

16 Your Assignment – 8.5”x11” paper
**Both should label what modern day fear/threat they represent. Partners should be consistent – meaning spy should reflect characteristics necessary to capture or spy on that type of villain/threat!! Partner #1 – Modern Day Spy: Will include a drawn picture/cartoon of you as a spy (what would you wear? How would you be incognito in your villain’s world?) Must list qualities that you have that would make YOU a good spy, as well as any “Achilles heels” – weaknesses you would have towards that modern threat. Draw what “gadgets” you as a spy would be able to use against your modern threat. These can be gadgets that have existed, or you can create a modern day spy gadget that would help you find and control your villain. Must have at least 2. Partner #2- Modern Day Villain: Will include a drawn picture/cartoon of you as a modern day villain (Think of modern day threats to the world or the US, how would you look?) Must list what you will do to disrupt/destroy/target to wreak havoc in a modern world. Must have at least 2 things, can be related. Draw what modern day weapons or gadgets you would need to complete your mission
