8 Workshop approach to MoU development
Result: local leaders evidently committed to prevention and reduction Exercises Why does homelessness matter? What needs to be in place? How can we achieve these objectives? What do we want leaders to commit to? Your input If you’re not feeling able to contribute, start up new discussion/move! Today’s output Presentation for Public Service Board Core principles Homelessness is everyone’s business Homelessness is bad for all of us, not just those experiencing it

9 Why does homelessness matter?
Outcome: leaders understand How and why homelessness impacts on their particular interests That committing to homeless prevention and reduction has value to them – it is worth the ‘investment’ Exercise one: what does your organisation exist to do, and who does it want to achieve this for? Note organisation then mission/purpose/outcomes (one per post it) Colour coded post its: children & families; young people; working age; ageing well; all populations Colour coded pens: blue/black – for everyone (universal); red/green - for some populations (targeted and specific) Exercise two (life course): how and why does homelessness (risk of becoming and actual) impact on organisation outcomes? Flip chart statements – what would you say to leaders? Burning platform!! Sense check Outcomes and populations – are any missing (who is not here?) Thinking about your communities/service users, would they recognise what you’ve said?

11 What needs to be in place?
Outcome: leaders understand What needs to be different and why Broadly speaking, how they would know that they’re on track Exercise – life course Agree statements about what you want to see/what should be in place Why? What are the primary reasons why this is important? Thinking about outcomes for populations Example Members of the public understand the risks of becoming homeless, and impact, and make informed decisions to mitigate this Why? Evidence of missed opportunities to prevent homelessness at earlier stage; some people may be able to meet own needs

12 How can we achieve these objectives?
Outcome: leaders understand opportunities to tackle homelessness (& wider outcomes) Delivering through core business (the day job) Other existing opportunities – plans/projects underway or committed to eg, DCLG £ outputs What remains to be done ie, not within either of the above? Exercise – for each objective: What could be done through core business (may be doing things differently)? What plans/projects underway that could contribute? How could homeless prevention trailblazer outputs contribute? What else needs doing? Who could contribute & what will they need?

13 What do you want leaders to commit to?
Outcomes: Public Service Board leaders are Clear what you’re asking of them & their organisations Confident in making a statement of their commitment (they know what resources are needed/believe they’re available) Other leaders are identified and supported to reach the same position Exercises Thinking about previous exercises, what should leaders commit to? Statement of commitment relevant to all Statement of commitments relevant to some populations and/or some leaders Who’s missing, what commitments are needed, how will these be secured? How would you expect commitment to be demonstrated in practice?
