2 Day and Night – page 2 The Earth’s ROTATION on its own axis causes the change of ‘day’ and ‘night’. The Earth rotates on its axis once every 24 hours approximately. The rotation of the Earth is WEST to EAST , so the Sun is visible in the eastern sky first. The Sun shines only on HALF of the Earth at any time, so that half of the Earth is in daylight and the other half is in NIGHT.

3 Day and Night – page 2 The tilt on the Earth’s axis causes ‘day’ and ‘night’ to be of different lengths in different parts of the world. The autumn and spring EQUINOXES occur twice (2 times) year when the day and night are of EQUAL length.

4 Seasons – page 2 Write down these dates at the top of page 2!
There are four distinct seasons Winter-December 22nd Spring- March 21st Summer-June 21st Autumn(fall)-September 23rd

6 Seasons – page 2 Seasons are caused by the Earth’s revolution around the Sun and the unchanging tilt of the Earth’s axis. The different distances to the Sun caused by the tilt AND REVOLUTION cause seasons. The season depends on how much of the Earth’s surface is covered by light rays, and at what angle they reach the Earth’s surface. Head-on rays on a small area are strong and cause LONG seasons. Slanting rays focusing on a large area are weaker and cause SHORT seasons.

7 Revolution/Seasons

8 Rotation and Revolution Video
Fill out the Venn Diagram on the next slide while watching the video. You should have: 2 facts for ROTATION 2 facts for REVOLUTION 2 similarities

9 Draw a Venn Diagram in your Notebook under Target Time...

Rotation Revolution Earth Spins on its own axis Takes Earth 24 hours to complete one full ROTATION Causes day and night Earth orbits the sun Takes Earth days to revolve around the sun. Results in 1 Earth year.

11 Draw a Venn Diagram in your Notebook under Target Time...
Rotation Revolution Similarities Both motions involve the sun Both are constant motions that the Earth makes Both are measures of time on Earth.
