Weathering, Erosion & Deposition

Weathering B R E A It down K
Process by which water, wind and ice break down rocks. There are 2 types of weathering: Mechanical and Chemical

Mechanical Weathering
Process by which rocks are broken down into smaller pieces by physical forces. Root Pry Abrasion (grinding) Ice wedging Burrowing of animals

Root Pry

Abrasion

Ice Wedging Why would it be beneficial to seal concrete?

Burrowing of Animals

Chemical Weathering the process that breaks down rock through chemical changes. Water – breaks down rock over time Oxygen – combines with iron to form rust (oxidation) Carbon dioxide – dissolves in water to form carbonic acid

Water breaking down rock

Oxygen combining with iron to form rust – “oxidation”

Carbon dioxide dissolves in water to form carbonic acid that weakens limestone and marble
Will form a sink hole or cave

This can cause sink holes and caves

Erosion C A R R I E S It away
Movement of weathered rock (sediment) by wind, water, ice or gravity

Wind – sand storms or Haboob

Water Forms canyons Erodes land by water

Ice – glaciers

Gravity Rockslides Landslides

Erosion Control silt fencing terracing

Deposition D O R here P Process by which wind, water and gravity leave weathered rock (sediment) in a new location

Wind

Water

Gravity
