1 Romeo and Juliet Character analysis

2 Today we will: Identify the requirements for the character analysis of a Romeo and Juliet character, as part of the coursework specification. Identify what a character analysis/study is. Create a basic character study of ourselves. Discuss the points that should be included. Create a character study of someone we know. Develop the points identified to relate to the coursework question.

3 Complete the hand-out sheet about yourself
Write your name or draw a basic picture of yourself in the middle and add something to each of the boxes on the sheet. We will share some of the responses with the group.

4 What is a character study?

5 A character study or character analysis gives us information as a reader about what the character is like. This can be how they look physically, including elements such as hair colour, eye colour, age, what they are wearing etc. to help us VISUALISE the character. In our case however it is more likely to include detail about what they are like as a person, such as what they say, how they act, what other people think of them, along with elements that we might call their PERSONALITY.

6 It tells us what they are like on the outside
But also………

7 Not those type of insides!!!!!!
What they are like on the INSIDE Not those type of insides!!!!!!

8 How they think What they say How they feel What they do Relationships with others

9 Keeping these points in mind, complete a character analysis of someone you know.
(It must be someone that you know so that you can include enough detail) You can choose: a friend, a relative, a teacher, anyone who you can give enough information about. Please do not be unkind when giving information, especially if you are choosing a classmate to analyse!

10 Other examples of character studies in every day life are :
C.V’s Personal statements References Why do we have to give information about ourselves when applying for jobs or college places etc? Why do we have to give a referee or character reference sometimes when applying for such positions?

11 So what about our coursework?

12 We will need to look at the same information, focussing on:
What the character says that tells us something about them. What the character does that tells us something about them. What other characters think of them. How do they react in situations that tells us something about them? How do they interact with other characters? Why is the character important to the story?

13 Most Importantly! We must show where we get our points from.
We must EVIDENCE our work with QUOTES from the text. Which parts of the text give us the information that we need? We must show where we get our points from. Remember the P.E.E. chain!

14 Evidence – Include a quote to support your
Point Make your point Evidence – Include a quote to support your point. Explain - Explain how the chosen quote proves the point you have made.

15 Example: The bird was quite large in size. We find this out as the character Robbie says “Look at that chubby bird over there!”. This quote indicates that the character thinks the bird is large due to the use of the word “chubby”. SO… The bird was quite large in size = POINT “Look at that chubby bird over there!” = EVIDENCE This quote indicates that the character thinks the bird is large due to the use of the word “chubby” = EXPLAIN

16 If you use this format then you should produce informative responses because you are not only making points about the piece, you are backing your points up with evidence and also explaining where you got the point from. This shows that you can pick relevant parts from the text, that you understand why they are relevant and you can tell others why too! Pssssst (These points are what the examiners will be looking for!)

17 Think about the points you will need to make.
Over the hols: Choose a character. You should avoid choosing the obvious characters such as Romeo & Juliet. Your response will show a greater comprehension of the piece if you choose Mercutio or Tybalt for example. Think about the points you will need to make. Look back on the list from today’s session. What can you say about the character? Find some quotes from the text. Look up quotes to prove your points. Make a list of the page numbers for your quotes as this will save you time when looking them up again in future.

18 Today we have: Identified the requirements for the character analysis of a Romeo and Juliet character, as part of the coursework specification by: Identifying what a character analysis/study is through group discussion Created a basic character study of ourselves, using this as a basis for identifying points that we think should be included in a character analysis. Discussed the points that should be included in order to give information about a person or character, including internal and external factors. Created a character study of someone we know, using the points identified to aid our descriptions. Developed the points identified to relate to the coursework question, identifying what we need to include in our written piece and the importance of using quotes to prove the points we make.
