Why don’t humans have wings?
Adaptations Why don’t humans have wings?
2
Adaptations What are adaptations? They are special features which help organisms to survive and reproduce in their environments. Adaptations can help organisms find food, find mates, raise their babies, survive harsh climates and move about.
4
Activity List as many adaptations of plants as you can in two minutes e.g. Roots grow deep into the ground to find water for photosynthesis.
5
There are 3 kinds of adaptations:
Structural adaptations: Adaptations to a part of an organisms body (what they have) Physiological adaptations: Adaptations that are processes or chemicals inside an organism (what is inside) Behavioural adaptations: Adaptations which are behaviours or activities (what they do)
6
Draw this in your notebooks: Adaptations
Organism Behavioural Physiological Structural Elephant Penguin Desert Tortoise

Organism Behavioural Physiological Structural Elephant Move in herds to protect young, elderly etc from lions and tigers. Trunk long for tree tops and teeth made for grinding difficult branches. Penguin Rest eggs on their feet to stop the egg form getting cold on the ice. Helps eggs survive in cold weather. Only send blood to their feet every now and again. Keeps them warm without wasting energy. Wings shaped like flipper & feet against body for steering means they swim efficiently. Easier to catch prey. Desert Tortoise Dig shallow pits to catch the water for drinking. Withdraw head, legs, and tail into shell protecting against predators. Bodies can digest food so they are able to obtain water from their food. Shells difficult to shatter so predators can not break them.
8
Sandy Desert: Sand dunes always being moved by the wind. Little rain except for dew at night, there are a few spiny shrubs and some lizards and insects. Very hot during the day and cold at night. Citrus Orchards: Grapefruit grow here and it is the organisms main food. Its main enemy is the farmer who spreads nets over the trees and hawks to stop the organism from taking the fruit. Rocky Shores: Strong waves hit the shore. The main food is tough seaweed that grows in cracks between rocks. The main enemies are fish.
9
Habitats: places where organisms live
Living things are adapted to live in their habitat e.g. Desert Tortoises' can digest food so they are able to obtain water from their food. Organisms must live in a habitat that is suited to its lifestyle. Many organisms living together are called populations Many different populations make up a community
10
Your task: Make a poster about a New Zealand plant or animal. There are a selection to choose from. Your poster must include info about: The plant or animal’s habitat The adaptations it has to live in that habitat The kingdom and class it belongs in Details of its appearance and food sources Any other interesting facts
