Changing Earth’s Surface
Section 9.1
2
Erosion Moving sediments from one place to another
5 major agents all carry sediments using energy of motion all drop sediments when energy of motion decreases (deposition)
3
1) Gravity- mass movements
Slump – occurs on steep slopes when underlying material weakens - moves as one large mass - leaves a curved scar
4
1) Gravity- mass movements
Creep – very slow movement of sediment - caused by freezing and thawing
5
1) Gravity- mass movements
Rockslides – large rocks break off of steep slopes and tumble quickly to bottom - occurs in mountainous areas - most often after heavy rains
6
1) Gravity- mass movements
Mudflows – heavy rains mix with sediment and form a pasty substance which moves downhill - happens in relatively dry areas video video2
7
The end result in all mass movements is that there is a constant change to a less steep slope.
