Are used nationally, and can be transferred between polytechs and universities Focuses on communicating in real life situations Successful completion of Level 3 > technical and vocational training and qualifications (= IELTS 5) Successful completion of Level 4 > degree programmes (= IELTS 5.5)

4 SIX STEPS

5 SKILLS PROGRESSION Level 1. Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions. Can read and write simple sentences on known topics. Level 2. Can understand and use basic language for everyday life and to get information. Can read and find specific information. Can write simple connected sentences on known topics. Exit level: IELTS 4 Level 3. Can understand main points and details from longer discussions and presentations. Can speak about personal ideas and keep a discussion going. Can write connected texts with reasonable accuracy. Exit level: IELTS 5

6 Level 4. Can understand main ideas and key details from familiar and sometimes unfamiliar topics . Can read and understand complex texts, find, organise and summarise information in texts. Can speak fluently about a range of familiar and unfamiliar topics. Can write with few errors. Can research information and arguments from a number of sources. Exit level: IELTS 5.5 Level 5. Can understand main ideas of spoken English on complex and abstract topics. Can speak fluently and unplanned on a variety of topics to give information and to explain ideas. Can manage interactions in a wide variety of settings. Can independently read and understand complex texts. Can write long, well structured texts. Can research, summarise and evaluate information from a variety of sources. Exit level: IELTS 6

You can read, talk to people, take photos…… Individual or group Can include field trips, community interaction, volunteer work You have to finish specific tasks e.g. write a report, give a presentation, make a video Academic option (Level 4) completes EAP Unit standards
