3 Liquid Fluid Experiment
Separation of two liquid phases, immiscible or partially mixable liquids, is a common requirement in the process industries. For example: In the unit operation of Liquid – Liquid “extraction” the liquid contracting step must be followed by a separation stage. It is also frequently necessary to “separate” small quantities of “entrained water” form process streams. The simplest form of equipment used to separate “Liquid phases” is the “gravity decanter”.

4 Liquid Fluid Experiment
Various proprietary equipment is also used to promote coalescence and improve separation in difficult systems or where emulsions are likely to form. Here two types of decanters.. Continuous Gravity Decanter Centrifugal Decanter But, We shall described “Continuous Gravity Decanter for Aniline.

5 Decanters (separator)
Decanter are used to Separate liquids where there is a sufficient difference in density between the liquids for the droplets to settle readily decanters are essentially tanks which give sufficient residence time for the droplets of the dispersed phase to rise to the enter face between the phases and coalesce. In on operating decanter these will be three distinct zones or bonds. Clear heavy liquids Separating dispersed liquids Clear light liquids

6 Decanters (separator)
Decanters are normally designed for continuous operation but the same design principles will apply to batch operated units. A great viscosity of vessel shapes is used for decanters, but most applications a cylindrical vessel will be suitable one will be the cheapest shape. The position of the interface can be controlled, with or without the use of instruments by use of. Syphon take at for the heavy liquid. The height of the take off can be determined by making a pressure balance.

10 Decanter design

11 Decanter design The equation is used to calculated the settling velocity with a droplets size of 150 mm. Decanter feeds :- If the calculated the settling velocity is grater than 4*10^3 m/s The cylindrical diameter vessel depend upon the position of the interface in the decanter. The depth of the dispersion bond is a function of the liquid flow rate and the interfacial area.
