Agriculture in Berks County “The Food and Fiber System” Commodities meat, fruits/veggies, grains + Wool, cotton = The System = Everything involved to get food and fiber (the commodities) to the consumer. What was the answer to the riddle on Page 9? Agriculture is… more than farming. The system starts with seed and ends with supper.

10 The Food and Fiber System
There are 3 steps in the system to get from seed to supper: 1. The Farm Supply Store = where the farmer shops for supplies, tools, seed, equipment, etc.

11 The Food and Fiber System
There are 3 steps in the system to get from seed to supper: I’m the Producer. I shop at the Farm Supply Store. 2. Production Farming = The Producer or Farmer who produces the commodities.

14 The Food and Fiber System
Remember: Three steps to get from seed to supper: Farm Supply Store and the Banker Producer/Farmer 3. Processing and Marketing = This is the step that… Processes commodities Moves commodities and products Packages products Sells products Step #3 employs the most people in The Food and Fiber System.
