5 Use the Vastus Lateralis in L&D
Most shots given in the postpartum period using the deltoid muscle However some may be given in L&D. If so, we administer in the vastus lateralis muscle Why? Most patients have an epidural therefore no associated pain when given

6 Measles, Mumps and Rubella Vaccine (MMR)
Administered to postpartum women who were rubella non-immune during pregnancy Not given during pregnancy due to the possible teratogenic effect on the fetus Given just before discharge as patient may experience a low-grade temperature after receiving the shot Patient teaching: Do not get pregnant for at least 3 months as the vaccine may be harmful/ teratogenic to the fetus

7 MMR Vaccine The vaccine comes in powder form
Needs to be reconstituted with sterile water/diluent

8 MMR Injection Site Use the fleshy, upper arm towards the back
This is a SQ injection Use a 1 mL syringe Chose a 25 gauge needle; 5/8” in length Do not aspirate
