1 Shrp2 and safety training and analysis center (stac)
Yusuf Mohamedshah Research Highway Safety Specialist Federal Highway Administration Presented at ATSIP, August 6 – 10, 2017

2 outline Brief Description of SHRP2 Safety Data: Roadway Information Database (RID) & Naturalistic Driving Study (NDS) Safety Training and Analysis Center (STAC) SHRP2 Implementation Assistance Program (IAP) Projects FHWA Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) Projects SHRP2 NDS Pooled Fund

3 RID NDS Shrp2 safety data (GIS) Data Complete Captured System
Naturalistic Driving Study Roadway Information Data

4 Naturalistic Driving Study Data (NDS)
3,500 Participants 5.4 Million trips – 30+ million miles Passenger car, Van, SUV, Pickup 1,465 crashes 1 Million hours continuously recorded video (exposure data) Physical Size: 4 Petabytes of data

5 Driver behavior Road features Vehicle sensors Road design
Driving conditions and traffic Traffic control Road design Driver behavior Vehicle sensors

6 Data Acquisition System
Rear looking camera Head Unit Front Turn Signals GPS WiFi Antenna DAS Main Unit Radar Unit Radar Interface Box OBD Connector Fuse Box

7 Roadway Information Database (RID)
It is part of SHRP2 data that provides context for the NDS drivers. Four types of data present in RID: Mobile Van Collected data Acquired data from each site Existing data from DOT and ESRI HPMS data

8 Mobile Van Data Data was collected from following six States:
Florida (Tampa) Indiana (Bloomington) Pennsylvania (State College) New York (Buffalo) North Carolina (Durham) Washington (Seattle) Approximately 25,000 centerline miles of data collected

9 Data collection sites Tampa, FL Seattle, WA Buffalo, NY
Bloomington, IN State College, PA Durham, NC Tampa, FL

10 mobile van collected assets
33,000 miles of shoulders 518,570 signs 11,852 miles of rumble 10,756 miles of median 7,376 miles lighting 6,129 miles of barriers 43,195 intersections

11 Safety training and analysis center (stac)
Established by FHWA to: Expand understanding of NDS and RID databases By developing training materials Provide access to PII data by Establishing a secure connection to VTTI Creating a Secure Data Enclave (SDE) to access and process NDS data Developing access protocols and procedures for using SDE Expand usability of NDS data by Developing reduced datasets and analysis tools Developing Video analytic tools to process video data

12 STAC Inauguration

13 Stac activities Two use cases
Center for Transportation Research and Education (CTRE), Iowa State University Operations R&D at TFHRC

14 Implementation assistance program (IAP)
Funded by Transportation Research Board(TRB) under SHRP2 Phased Process

15 Iap projects Phase I had 11 projects 9 projects promoted to Phase II
6 projects promoted to Phase III List of research topics Adverse Weather Conditions Horizontal and Vertical Curves Interchange Ramps Roadway Departure Roadway Lighting Speeding Work Zone Vulnerable Road Users Intersections Enforcement

16 Broad agency announcement (baa)
Projects funded by FHWA Office of Safety Research and Development Two Phases 8 Projects awarded in Phase $100,000 per study 6 Projects promoted to Phase II Each project had to have a State DOT as a partner Final deliverable for each project is an implementable countermeasure

17 Baa phase II projects MRI Global Missouri, Ohio, Utah Speed
Development of Speed-Safety Relationships TransAnalytics Florida, Maryland Vulnerable Road Users Toward a Better Understanding of Vulnerable Road User Safety Issues University of Missouri Missouri Work Zones A Multidisciplinary Approach to Investigate Work Zone Safety using SHRP 2 Safety Data Iowa State Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan Rural Intersection Safety Research Utilizing the SHRP2 Safety Data to Support Highway UMTRI Michigan Analysis of SHRP2 Data to Understand Normal and Abnormal Driving Behavior in Work Zones CUBRC New York Enforcement The Development of New Insights into Driver Behavior to Improve High Visibility Highway Safety Enforcement Programs (HVE) Contractor Partner State(s) Focus Area Research Title

18 Shrp2 nds Pooled fund FHWA has established this pooled fund to
Support State DOTs and USDOT to use NDS/RID databases for research To address high priority needs by conducting ground breaking research To develop implementable solutions for State and Local transportation agencies A Technical Advisory Committee will be created representing participating States in the Pooled Fund

19 SHRP2 Safety pooled fund
STAC will manage Pooled Fund TAC will define research needs, funding allocations and select projects It is a cross cutting Pooled Fund involving Safety, Operations and Planning FHWA has committed $1 Million over 5 year period We are asking each participating State to contribute $50,000 per year These States have joined: Alabama, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Nevada & Washington
