Let’s talk about one company that’s going through such a transformation – Coats and Clarke.
Coats & Clark, the world’s leading industrial thread manufacturer, has made the Microsoft cloud the linchpin of its strategy to transform its business for a data-driven age.
Founded in 1700s during industrial revolution, it has stayed relevant for 265 years. Today, 7,000 information workers spread across 160 worldwide locations and 70 manufacturing facilities.
Uses Microsoft Office 365 to share and make sense of information across locations and time zones. The technology staff supports anywhere, any-device productivity by securing applications and data with the Microsoft Mobility + Security suite. And Coats has moved nearly all of its datacenter assets into Microsoft Azure, including its production SAP HANA systems, to gain elasticity, vastly improved performance, and lower costs. Coats is exploring new Microsoft cloud services that it can use to transform its products, optimize operations, empower employees, and delight customers.
HANA journey: For years, Coats used the Oracle database with its SAP applications. However, to improve SAP performance, it decided to switch to the SAP HANA database, which features high-performance in-memory technology.
Coats consulted with Microsoft about running SAP HANA in Azure, because HANA requires a very specialized server. Coats was pleased to find out that Microsoft was just putting the finishing touches on a solution called, appropriately enough, SAP HANA in Azure. SAP HANA in Azure includes extra beefy (G-Series) Azure Virtual Machines, Microsoft Azure Storage, Microsoft Azure Network and, in Coats’s case, Microsoft Azure ExpressRoute for high-performance connectivity between Coats and global Azure datacenters.
Working with two different consulting partners—Axians, which helped configure SAP HANA, and Brillio, which configured Coats’s SAP HANA in Azure estate and performed the migration—Coats moved its complex HANA environment to Azure with no hiccups.
The performance boosts from running SAP on HANA in Azure have been eye-popping. Transactions that previously took 12 hours now take 12 minutes. Reports that previously took 6 hours to produce now take 6 minutes.
By speeding up SAP, they’ve sped up the whole business. When you can speed order processing from hours to minutes, you can accelerate ordering, increase plant productivity, and improve shipment times. You can do same-day factory production planning versus having to run scheduling jobs overnight. You can insert rush orders into the production schedule the same day versus waiting 24 to 48 hours. The whole production engine has sped up.

But we know SAP HANA systems can explode pretty quickly. So we’ve built specific hardware to give you unparalleled scale and performance. Called SAP HANA Large Instances they’re based on purpose-built infrastructure for HANA, are fully managed with 99.99% SLA and have up to 4 TB RAM per node today. We’ve been increasing this over time, and will continue to do so, so you’re HANA applications future-proof from a scale/performance POV.
