Name Change Proposal: Technical Committee on E-Commerce to Technical Committee on Business Informatics and Systems Kwei-Jay (KJ) Lin Co-Chair, TCEC Univ. California, Irvine

2 A Little History In 1999 there was much interest on e-Commerce, so we have organized some workshops and formed a focused interest group in this area. The Task Force on EC (TFEC) was proposed to the IEEE CS in early 2001. The IEEE TFEC was approved and started charter in May 2001. Technical Committee on E-Commerce was approved on 2003

3 Past Activities Conferences Web Service Challenge Competition
CEC: Joint Conf. on E-Commerce and Enterprise Computing, San Francisco (2003), San Diego (2004), Munich (2005), San Francisco (2006), Tokyo, Japan (2007), Washington DC (2008), Vienna, Austria (2009), Shanghai (2010) ICEBE: International Conference on e-Business Engineering , Beijing (2005), Shanghai (2006), Hong Kong (2007), Xian (2008), Macao (2009), Shanghai (2010) SOCA: International Conference on Service-Oriented Computing and Applications, Newport Beach, CA (2007), Taipei, Taiwan (2009), Perth, Australia (2010) Web Service Challenge Competition The development of software agents to discover pertinent web services and compose them to create higher-level functionality. 5 Technology on e-Commerce
In the past decade, e-commerce and enterprise computing has been successfully established as a feasible, profitable, and continually evolving technology. Although many people think of e-commerce as “online shopping”, the technology and its application are now much broader and encompass most business operations in modern enterprises. There is a growing engineering community focusing on technical and algorithmic issues on the business process.

6 Business Informatics Business Informatics takes an proactive role in aligning business objectives, business processes and IT. The core element of business informatics is a methodological approach for describing, explaining, predicting, and designing information and communication models, architectures, and systems for the business environment.

7 Business Informatics and Systems
Business informatics is a discipline combining information technology (IT), informatics and management concepts. The BI discipline is an established, successful academic discipline including bachelor, master and diploma programs in Europe, including Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands, etc. (more than 50 universities, 3 in US)

8 TC BIS Technical Areas Business Process and Integration
Operations and QoS in E-Commerce Enterprise Computing Web Services and Web Servers Agent Technology for Commerce Business Intelligence for Business Operation Web Data Mining Mobile Commerce Business Grid and Cloud Computing

9 Related IEEE CS TC’s (I)
Technical Committee on Intelligent Informatics (TCII) “tools and systems using cognitive and intelligent paradigms such as knowledge engineering, artificial neural networks, fuzzy logic, evolutionary computing, and rough sets, with research and applications in data mining, Web intelligence, brain informatics, intelligent agent technology, parallel and distributed information processing, and virtual reality”

10 Related IEEE CS TC’s (II)
TC on Bioinformatics (TCBI) “dedicated to interest in all aspects of computational methods and tools geared for modeling and analysis of life science problems, with emphasis on applications in biology and medicine. It provides a platform for practitioners and researchers to exchange information and resources related to the fields of bioinformatics and systems biology”
