1 Social Change and Reform
SS Examine the importance of social change and reform in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Essential Question – What role did reformers play in transforming the social and political conditions in America during the Progressive Era? This lesson will also address some of content covered on the Content Focus Report for SS.912.A.3.8 for 2014 and 2015.

2 Bell Ringer (3 minutes) What are Progressive Era authors such as Jacob Riis and Upton Sinclair best known for? focusing attention on social conditions fighting for the civil rights of African Americans promoting the interests of the American farmer supporting the goal of woman’s suffrage What did Progressive Era reforms such as the initiative, referendum, and recall attempt to do? increase the power of citizens in state and local government reestablish the system of checks and balances provide low-interest loans to farmers expand voting rights to Native Americans

Why did so many people support the Progressive movement?

5 Conservation (I Do) President Roosevelt:
supported the conservation of forests, wildlife & natural resources appointed Gifford Pinchot to head the U.S. Forest Service Roosevelt & Pinchot believed experts in forestry and resource management should manage the forests

6 Conservation (I Do) President Roosevelt:
1903 – Roosevelt visited John Muir in Yosemite which led Roosevelt to designate Devils Tower, the Petrified Forest, & the Grand Canyon as national monuments 1908 – National Conservation Commission est. Pinchot believed natural resources should be used to benefit people who are living now, Muir believed it was important to conserve natural resources

7 Women’s Suffrage (We Do)
Elizabeth Cady Stanton: was an early leader of the woman’s rights movement 1848 – held the Seneca Falls Convention in July with Lucretia Mott and other women, drafted the Declaration of Sentiments and proposed that women be granted the right to vote During the Civil War she focused her efforts on abolishing slavery but after the war she became more outspoken in promoting women suffrage 1869 – founded the National Woman Suffrage Association with Susan B. Anthony, served as president of the NWSA until 1890 called for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution granting women the right to vote

8 Women’s Suffrage (We Do)
Susan B. Anthony: began her reform efforts by supporting the temperance movement & the abolishment of slavery focus shifted to helping women achieve voting rights after the Civil War published The Revolution, a weekly journal for women’s rights co-founder of the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) voted in the Presidential Election of 1862 on the basis of the 14th Amendment, court ruled right to citizenship did not apply to women
