The Thirties Background The Great Depression (1929-late 1930) The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression that took place during the 1930s. The timing of the Great Depression varied across nations; The Great Depression had devastating effects in countries both rich and poor. Personal income, tax revenue, profits and prices dropped, while international trade plunged by more than 50%. Unemployment in the U.S. rose to 25% and in some countries rose as high as 33%.

The Thirties Background The Great Depression (1929-late 1930) Marxist Karl Marx saw recession and depression as unavoidable under free-market capitalism as there are no restrictions on accumulations of capital other than the market itself.

The Thirties Henry Miller <Tropic of cancer)> He is unhappy with traditional novel. He was much more of a rebel. His novel is Tropic of cancer (Paris, 1934). He hated America, and lived in Paris for 9years. During that time , he met with Transcendentalists writing on surrealism.

Late in the novel, Miller explains his artistic approach to writing the book itself, Combining autobiography and fiction, some chapters follow a narrative of some kind and refer to Miller's actual friends, colleagues, and workplaces; others are written as stream-of-consciousness reflections

The Thirties The stream of conciousness stream of consciousness, also known as interior monologue, is a narrative mode or device that depicts the multitudinous thoughts and feelings which pass through the mind. The term was coined by William James in 1890 in his The Principles of Psychology, and in 1918 May Sinclair first applied the term stream of consciousness, in a literary context
