1 Scientific Classification
Day 2: How Scientists Classify Things

2 Where to begin….

3 Scientists Start Classifying by looking at cells:
Living (have __________) Non – Living ( ____ made of _________)

4 But there are so many living things…
We must classify them more…

5 It began in the 18th century…
Carolus Linnaeus is known as the “father of ________________” First scientist to start naming and classifying things according to a hierarchy (________________________________)

6 Linnaeus’ System Linnaeus classification hierarchy began with only __________ kingdoms Linnaeus then divided each kingdom into ______ groups based on features (__________ structures or/and ______________structures)

7 Today’s Classification System vs. Linnaeus
Today’s/Modern System Linneaus System

8 Today’s Levels of Classification System
Scientists start by breaking plants/animals into kingdoms. Scientist continue to sort these groups into even smaller groups. Each time they sort, they use the organism’s features to decide whether or not the organism belongs to the group. The largest classification group would be the “kingdom”

9 6 Kingdoms of Living Things
Archaebacteria Eubacteria Protist Fungi Animals Plants One cell One and many celled Some move Some make own food, some get food from other living things Ex.

10 Each Kingdom is broken up into Phylum
Animal Kingdom Plant Kingdom

11 Animal Kingdom Vertebrates Invertebrates

12 But is that enough….. Coming up tomorrow:
We will learn examples of vertebrates and invertebrates We learn if and how these are classified even more Look at the different categories of vertebrates and their characteristics We will look at specific examples of a species with their “full names” and talk about what they mean.

13 Homework: Complete sentences. USE YOUR NOTES!
What are the first two groups that scientists break things into to start classifying them? How are these two groups different? __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ How are today’s classification system and Linneus’s classification system different? How are they alike? What are the 6 levels of classification that we use? How many kingdoms are there? _______________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________

14 Homework PART 2!! What are some characteristics that are used to classify living things? _________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________ What two groups do they classify animals into? What is difference about a vertebrate and an invertebrate? What do a vertebrate and an invertebrate have in common?
