21 Example Exam Question Question 3 (8 marks) Editing, including vision and sound mixing, involves the careful coordination of images, sound effects, dialogue and music. Editing can contribute to the development of a narrative in many ways, which can include  establishing a genre and/or program type  contributing to character development  developing storyline(s)  creating suspense and/or tension. Discuss how editing has been employed in one sequence from each of the two texts you have studied this year. You may refer to the dot points above and/or other ways that the editing contributes to the sequence and the narrative.

Characters play a major part in advancing a narrative. As a story element, the establishment and development of characters also affects how an audience engages with a text. With reference to one or more characters in both texts you have studied this year, discuss character establishment and development and the relationships between characters within each text  how character motivations affect narrative progression in each text  how characters in both texts affect audience response to the overall narratives. In addition to character, your answer should refer to two or more other story and/or production elements.

35 Example Exam Question Question (6 marks) In narratives, time may be structured in a variety of ways: slow motion is often used to heighten the drama of a particular scene and engage the audience, montage is often used to develop the narrative in a short period of time. With reference to the other text you studied, explain how time was structured and how this contributed to the narrative. Question 4 (4 marks) With reference to one text, discuss how editing of vision and/or sound is used to structure time within the narrative. In your answer you may include discussion of style, techniques, placement, pace and rhythm of editing.

Eg Two hands when Jimmy runs into Alex on the way you can discuss camera, lighting, sound, editing, character, storyline, cause and effect, structuring of time and setting quite easily. A good contrast and compare could be the sequence where Pope is watching Nicole and J on the couch

39 Example Exam Question Question (5 marks) Audiences can react in a variety of ways, from intense excitement during an action sequence to heartfelt sadness in response to a tragic closure. With reference to one key sequence, discuss ways in which production and story elements are used to engage an audience in one narrative text you studied this year.

During the opening sequence in film the audience are usually introduced to the main characters, setting and storylines. Compare how production and/or story elements combine to establish one main character from both texts that you studied this year. Refer to two of the following elements Camera Lighting Structuring of time Setting Another Question (4 marks) Comparing both films that you studied for narrative describe and explain how the setting functions to communicate ideas to the audience.

46 Key Skill C analyse how production and story elements are read by audiences and contribute to narrative organisation and meaning Can you explain what meaning is created or what ideas are communicated through the use of production and story elements. How does this contribute to the progression of the narrative. (The story moving forward) How do audiences read/receive the texts. Most of the exam questions are focused on assessing how well you can do this.
