1 Chemistry – Aug 29, 2016 P3 Challenge –
What is the length of this bean? (Report your answer with the proper number of decimal places/sigfigs.) Visit the board for a close up HMK Check: Sig fig Worksheet. Keshon, Ruben,- Safety Contracts needed

2 Objectives and Agenda Objectives Agenda
To practice measuring length, mass and volume To learn about measuring with sigfigs Agenda Homework Review Measurement Lab Activity

3 Today’s Assignment What’s Due? (Pending assignments to complete.)
Complete the Measurement Lab Activity What’s Next? (How to prepare for the next day) Read p12-15

4 Homework Review Sigfig Worksheet Answers: Check yours and ask questions for clarification. 1. a) 3 b) 4 c) 3 d) 2 e) 2 f) 1 g) 3 h) 4 i) 5 2. a) 5.49 x 106 m or 5,490,000 m b) mL c) 31, 950 cm2 d) m2 e) 790 cm f) x 108 J or 389,278,000 J g) 225,834.8 cm3

5 Homework Review Sigfig Worksheet Answers: Check yours and ask questions for clarification. 3. a) 48,825 cm2  49,000 cm2 or 4.9 x 104 cm2 Round to 2 sigfig b) kg/L  3.1 kg/L Round to 2 sigfig c) L/s  12.3 L/s Round to 3 sigfig d) 166, cm2  170,000 cm2 or x 105 cm2 Round to 2 sigfig e) m3  41 m Round to 2 sigfig f) g/cm3  g/cm3 Round to 5 sigfig

6 Homework Review Sigfig Worksheet Answers: Check yours and ask questions for clarification. 4. a) J  J Round to 1 d.p. b) m  m Round to 3 d.p c) 934 g  900 g Round to hundreds place d) kPa  31.1 kPa Round to 1 d.p. e) dL  278 dL Round to ones place f) 1794 kg  kg Round to tens place

7 How to measure Uncertainty depends on the measurement device used and on how it is used to measure. Identify the smallest gradation marked on the measurement device. Measure to this level of precision (certain measurement) Add one more digit as an estimation of the true measurement’s location between the smallest gradation marks. (source of uncertainty) Try to decide on one of the five statements below. If you can’t decide between two statements, use the odd digit between. 0 right on the line, 2 just above the line, 4 almost halfway, 6 a little more than halfway, 8 nearly to the next line.

8 Practice

9 Exit Slip - Homework What lab equipment is best for measuring…
