1 December 6, 2016 Today you will need: Today’s Schedule Pen/ Pencil
Paper/ Notebook Today’s Schedule Static Electricity Quiz Q & A Start Properties of Matter

2 Properties of Matter

3 Q/ A : What is Matter? Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass. Examples?

4 Physical Properties A physical property is a characteristic that can be measured or observed. For example, color, odor and taste are examples of physical properties.

5 Physical Properties The state of matter is also a physical property. Is it a solid, liquid or gas at room temperature? Brain POP States of Matter States of Matter

6 States of Matter

7 Physical Properties Hardness- a measure of the resistance of a solid to being scratched or dented (harder materials will scratch softer ones) Malleability- ability of a material to be hammered or bent into other shapes. Ex- gold, tin, silver.

8 Physical Properties Ductility- ability of a material to be pulled into wires. Ex- copper Melting & Boiling Points- the temperatures at which substances change state.

9 Physical Properties Crystal Form- the solid form of many minerals which have a definite structure of cubes or blocks in a regular pattern. Ex- salt Solubility- the ability of a substance to dissolve in a solvent such as water. Ex- salt and pepper, drink mixes

10 Physical Properties Viscosity- how easily a liquid flows. Ex- maple syrup “vs” milk. Density- the amount of matter per unit volume of that matter. Brain POP- Measuring Matter

11 Make a Properties of Matter foldable that includes: a title, a definition and a drawing for each of the properties we will be looking at this year.

Calculator Paper/ Notebook Today’s Schedule: Q/ A Finish up Density Classwork of Density problems/ Textwork

13 Q/ A Out of the following, which physical property of matter is being observe ? Testing how molasses flows differently when hot and cold. Testing different metals to see how easily they can be shaped. Testing to see whether a nail can scratch or dent concrete.

14 A Closer Look at Density
Density is a physical property of matter. Each substance has its own characteristic density. Density is the mass per unit volume of a substance. Mass is measured on a balance scale and volume is measured with a ruler/meter stick or a graduated cylinder. Measuring Matter

15 Density Density can be expressed in 5 different units (depending on the size of the object): Liquids: g/ml g/l kg/l Solids: g/ cm3 kg/m3

16 Q/A What is our main formula for density?
What are the variations of the formula you may need to use, depending on the question?

17 Density To find volume: 1. Of a Rectangular Object: V= l×w×h

18 Density 2. Volume of Liquids- use a graduated cylinder.
Remember: 1 cm3 = 1 mL

19 Density 3. Volume of Irregular shaped Objects- use water displacement.
2 methods:

20 Density Problems Each density problem has 5 steps: 1. Given
2. Required 3. Analysis 4. Solution 5. Paraphrase

21 Helpful Hint! Sometimes you need to find the volume of an object or liquid when given the density and mass. In this case, use: V= m d Sometimes you need to find the mass of an object or liquid when you are given the density and the volume. In this case, use: m= d x v
