2 Background Born in Reading, Pennsylvania on October 2, 1879
His dad was a lawyer His mom taught school Attended Reading Boy’s High School- then went to Harvard in 1893

3 Background Cont. While at Harvard he wrote for Harvard Advocate, Trend, and Harriet Monroe’s magazine Poetry His first play was called Three Travelers watch a Sunrise in 1916 He left Harvard without receiving his degree and enrolled in New York’s Provincetown Playhouse.
