3 What is a CMS? CLIENT Manages the CONTENT
Clients can easily add, edit, and remove content GUI (Graphical User Interface) WYSIWYG Editor (What You See Is What You Get) – Intuitive You don’t have to know programming or be a developer Multiple Content Editors (users) can edit different content or areas of the site Easy to learn Examples: WordPress, Drupal, Plone, Kentico etc. We are using the Kentico CMS (Kentico EMS version 9)

4 Why Kentico CMS Features Content navigation is easy WYSIWYG editor
Images and media tools Built-in image editor Delegate content authorization Workflow – Check out Edit Save Check in Approve (soft or enforced) Publish Versioning Clients can roll back to a previous version of their pages Tagging (helps with Search Engine Optimization, custom filtering, search and display functionality) Built-in Web Analytics .Net platform easily integrates with other PITO applications

5 Definitions Content Owner – Owns the content & site (typically the dept. head) Content Editor(s) – Clients responsible for creating, editing & managing content on the site WYSIWYG Editor – A tool in the CMS to edit content & layout Internal Links – Hyperlinks that when clicked on (on the page) take you to another page on the same website External Links – Hyperlinks that when clicked on (on the page) take you to another page on a different external website Image Editor – a tool that can re-size, crop, & further edit pictures or graphics Template / Theme – the basic architecture & layout of your website pages (not modified through the CMS by clients) Document / Page Type – content in the system can behave or display differently depending on the type. Page (menu item), Events, News, Simple Article, Blog, Staff Profile & Folder are just a few examples Content Tree – left side of the Kentico Admin screen that shows your pages hierarchically CSS – (Cascading Style Sheets) is code used to control the style (look & feel) of your site

6 Demo – Using Kentico CMS
After logging into a Kentico website, you will see the Dashboard below. This shows the most commonly used apps for maintaining your site. App List Commonly Used Apps

7 Demo – Using Kentico CMS
Open the pages app from the dashboard or from the app list Preview (preview your changes before making them live) Edit view (the view that lets you edit/create pages) Root Page (base foundation of your site) Content Navigation (referred to as the Content Tree)

8 Demo- Edit an existing Page - Steps 1 & 2
Step 2: Check out. Step 1: Select the “About Us” page (or any other page except Home).

Step 4: Save. Step 5: Check in. Then, Publish. Lock icon – Document is checked out and locked Orange diamond icon - Unpublished Changes / Edit mode WYSIWYG Toolbar (formatting your content) Step 3: Edit/Add some content.

10 Demo – Add an Image to a page
1. Checkout the page first. 2. Click where you want to insert your image. 3. Click Insert/Edit image or media (filmstrip icon).

4. Click Media Libraries tab. Select the correct Site and then click on the folder/location you would like to upload to. 5. Click Upload. 7. Click Save & Close. On the next screen, click Save, Check in, and Publish. 6. A file browser will appear. Select any file and click open.

Demo - Create a new page and add external & internal links - Steps 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5 2. Click on the New (+) button and select the Page (menu item) document type. 3. Enter Page name. 1. Click on the root page. 4. Select template (Not Home or Master). 5. Click Save.

6. Type & Select the text you want an External Link for. 7. Click Insert/Edit Link Icon.

8. Select Web tab. 9. Type in External URL (do not include or 10. Set Target to “New window (_blank)”. 11. Click Save & Close.

2. Select the Properties tab. 1. Click on the page you created earlier. 3. From the dropdown click on Navigation.

6. Click Save after all changes are made. 4. Uncheck “Show in navigation” to hide page from menu. Keep checked for the page to appear in the main menu (checked by default). 5. If you want the page/menu item to redirect to another site/URL, click here & enter it.

Develop active & engaging content Create or outsource graphics & videos Keep your site current Perform periodic (annual) reviews of website goals, content, pages & navigation (refresh site content & pictures) Delete unnecessary pages Delete old files & images no longer referenced or linked (PDF’s, Word Doc’s, Excel spreadsheets, .gif, .jpg, .png, etc.) Monitor for & fix broken links (internal & external) Continue testing new & edited content on several internet browsers(Internet explorer, Chrome, FireFox, etc.) & mobile platforms(especially tables, pictures &videos) Contact PITO immediately when an editor no longer needs access to the site (terminations) Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
