Presentation on theme: "Chemical Change Physical Change Evidence"— Presentation transcript:

1 Chemical Change Physical Change Evidence
Changes the identity of a substance at the molecular level. Physical Change Changes the appearance of a substance without changing its identity. Example: a phase change or state of matter change (solid to liquid, liquid to gas, or the reverse) Evidence Shows us a chemical change has occurred. Example: produces light, produces heat, color change, produces gas, forms precipitate Precipitate When two liquids combine and create a solid which sinks to the bottom. A precipitate is evidence of a chemical change.

2 Chemical Changes EQ: How do I know a chemical change is happening?
A chemical change always results in the formation of a new substance. Some Chemical change examples: Fire (produces light and heat) Bleaching clothes (color change)

3 Chemical Changes EQ: How do I know a chemical change is happening?
Glow stick (color change, produces light) Exhaling CO₂ (produces gas) Mixing chemicals to form a solid that sinks (precipitate)

4 Chemical Changes EQ: How do I know a chemical change is happening?
Physical Change examples: Melting ice (phase change solid to liquid) Steam from coffee pot (phase change liquid to gas) Painting a fence (color covered but not changed) Cutting hair (hair on floor is still hair. Its location has just changed).

6 Chemical Changes In this column, which I’ve highlighted yellow, I want you to write three questions you have. Your questions need to be related to the subject of chemical changes. I will draw popsicle sticks to call on you to share your questions. I will give you some time to brainstorm with your table. Begin! EQ: How do I know a chemical change is happening? Physical Change examples: Melting ice (phase change solid to liquid) Steam from coffee pot (phase change liquid to gas) Painting a fence (color covered but not changed) Cutting hair (hair on floor is still hair. Its location has just changed).

Title: Cornell Notes: Chemical Changes Page 15 (That’s my page number. Yours may be different. Make sure you’re numbering your pages)! Glue your vocabulary (1st page of this slideshow) into your composition notebook. Add it to your table of contents. Title: Chemical Changes vocabulary.
