1 Applications of Percents
By Mrs. Muller

2 Key Vocabulary Percent: A ratio that compares a number to 100
Proportion: An equation stating that two ratios are equal. Cross Product: Multiplying the numerator of each ratio with the denominator of the other ratio. Markup: the amount of increase in price. Selling Price: mark up is added to the store’s cost for item; the price the store charges. Discount: the difference between the original price and the sale price of an item.

3 Key Proportions Amount of Markup Percent of Markup 100 Original Cost
Amount of Discount Percent of Discount 100 Original Cost

4 Finding a Percent of Markup Procedure
First step find the amount of markup by finding the difference between the two prices. Second step write a proportion. Let M=percent of markup. Third step write the cross products. Fourth step use the division property of equality in order to isolate the variable. Fifth Step Simplify.

5 Example of finding a percent of Markup
An electronic store orders sets of walkie-talkies for $14.85 each. The store sells each set for $ What is the percent of markup?

6 Finding a Percent of Discount Procedure
First find the amount of discount. Second write a proportion. Let d be the percent of discount. Third step write the cross products . Fourth Step simplify by multiplying the numbers together. Fifth Step use the division property of equality to isolate the variable. Sixth and final step, simplify.

7 Example of Finding a Percent of Discount
During a clearance sale, a keyboard that normally sells for $49.99 is discounted to $ What is the percent of discount?

8 Procedure for Finding a Sale Price
First write the percent as a decimal Second step Multiply Or you can do it as a proportion

9 Example Finding a Sale Price
The tablet Alexis wants cost $ if it is on sale for 30% off, how much does it cost now?
