2. Status of Sayana Press in Nigeria
Sayana Press has been registered in Nigeria and since 2014, (last quarter) DKT Nigeria has been distributing Sayana Press nationwide in the private sector.
Due to DKT Nigeria’s widespread distribution and promotion activities, awareness of Sayana Press has been created in the medical community in the private sector. Our distribution coverage reaches 94% of Nigeria (excluding the North-East states affected by Boko Haram activities)
47 sales representatives and supervising personnel directly distributing to pharmacies, clinics, hospitals and providers).
Approvals for Sayana Press injectable contraceptive for self-injection by users
Sayana Press is available also in the public sector (UNFPA). UNFPA is introducing Sayana Press in the public sector of ten states through three implementing partners.

3. Achievements with Sayana Press
1. Increased availability and accessibility to Sayana Press through Medical Sales teams.
SP is the only injectable in DKT’s basket of products.
2. Distribution over 726,650 units of Sayana Press in the private sector and some parts of the public sector. The distributed units represent about 10% of the Nigerian injectable market which stands at 2.3 million units per year.)
3. Training of Providers on the Sayana Press increased awareness of Sayana Press. Over providers from different cadres (Doctors, midwives / nurses, CHEWs) have been trained on the uniject Sayana Press injectable.

5. Lessons learned
(1) Contraceptive delivery of products increased availability
(2) increased reorders between August and October 2016 was attributed to the
(i) Hotspot initiative (FFA System);
(ii) Facility based training
(iii) DKT’s increased distribution teams throughout Nigeria
(3) 30% of Sayana Press users sampled were new users. (UCSF Study)
(4) High levels of provider bias in providing FP/SP to single or young women and prevalent misconceptions among women themselves (trainings and field staff feedback)

9. Next steps
(1) Self-injection approvals for Sayana Press injectable presents a new opportunity for distribution in terms of marketing and training (consumers).
Tailored marketing and communications strategies that will address the peculiarities of each region
(2) Nigeria’s youth population is estimated to be about 92 million. The informed nature of this population can be leveraged to promote contraceptive awareness and increase usage through mobile and online platforms and in a language, that resonates with young people.
(3) Expanding the contraceptive delivery portfolio of pharmacists and select PPMVs 2 to include administering injections
