1 Invited Speech National Taiwan University of Science and Technology
4th Nov 2016, EE :00~18:00 Design and Development of Cognitive and Meta-cognitive Machine Learning Techniques Machine learning is a subfield of artificial intelligence which revolves around empowering a machine with human-like learning capabilities. Most existing machine learning algorithms possess information processing ability of human beings which are cognitive in nature. However, they lack the ability to decide which information is worth learning and when to process the information. Research studies reveal that human learning is not only cognitive but also capable of judging information and self-regulating to decide what to learn, when to learn and how to learn using meta-cognition. Meta-cognition enables human learners to evaluate whether current knowledge is useful, identify when to learn a new knowledge as well as provide strategies to acquire that new knowledge. The study of meta-cognition has become necessary and significant in this new era of Big Data Analytics. In this talk, machine learning techniques which have both cognitive ability and meta-cognitive capability will be presented. Specifically,  two novel approaches, namely Meta-cognitive Fuzzy Extreme Learning Machine (McFELM) and Sequential Active Learning using Meta-cognitive Extreme Learning Machine (SEAL-ELM) will be presented. Experimental studies on some benchmark datasets and comparative study with the state-of-the-arts method demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approaches. Er Meng Joo Full Professor, the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Sponsor : National Taiwan University of Science and Technology Professor Er Meng Joo is currently a Full Professor in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He served as the Founding Director of Renaissance Engineering Programme and an elected member of the NTU Advisory Board and from 2009 to He served as a member of the NTU Senate Steering Committee from 2010 to 2012. Currently, Professor Er serves as the Editor-in-Chief of Transactions on Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence and the International Journal of Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Telecommunications.
