1 4-13-10 IN Match numbers with options
3 billion, 48,000, 423, 3 million Options Number of genes in the human genome implicated in cancer Approximate length of human genome Number of base pairs that differ from one person to another Cost to have your entire genome sequenced

2 Through Part B OUT C-note

3 Part B Analyzing A DNA model
View DVD segment “DNA structure” As you watch the DVD, look for information that will help you answer the following questions. Take notes in your journal.

4 Answer the following in your journal.
A. What characteristic of the subunits allows for a uniform diameter of the double helix? What type of interaction takes place between the subunits of each strand that encourages a double helix form?

5 B. How does the sequence of subunits on 1 strand provide a template for the sequence of subunits on the other strand? Is that important to replication? Explain your answer

6 Use the new information that you gathered from the DVD segment and the tasks below to reevaluate your 3rd model. C. Write a paragraph in your journal that describes how you would have to modify your 3rd model to reflect this new information. D. List 3 ways in which pop beads limit your ability to create a more detailed or more accurate model of a DNA molecule.

7 E. State what materials you could use to alter your pop bead model
E. State what materials you could use to alter your pop bead model. How would you assemble them to model DNA more accurately?

8 Notes: Replication Errors and Mutation
Even though DNA is a template for replication and is very accurate, errors do occur. Mutation - a chemical change in a gene, resulting in a new allele, or a change in the portion of a chromosome that regulates the gene. In either case, the change is hereditary.

9 Deletion mutation- mutation that results when replication enzymes mistakenly skip a base. The new DNA stand forms missing a base. A G T C C G C A T G C A T C G A T C C A A T C A G G C G T A C T A G C T A G G T T A G T C C G C A T G A T C G A T C C T T

10 Substitution mutation- mutation caused by substituting one small base for the other or one large base for the other during replication.
