2 Attack on Pearl Harbor Morning of Dec. 7, 1941
Empire of Japan attacks U.S. naval base in Hawaii Over 2,403 Americans died 21 ships destroyed, over 300 aircraft destroyed Officially pulled the U.S. into World War II

3 Internment of Japanese-Americans
Attack on Pearl Harbor caused fear among Americans They feared the loyalty of Japanese-Americans Led to prejudice & sometimes violence

4 Internment of Japanese-Americans
FDR ordered all J.A.’s on west coast to be moved to rural prison camps 120,000 people forced to move

5 Nazi Ideology Nazi Party believed in German superiority
Economically, socially, militarily, and “racially” Hitler wanted the world dominated by Germany

6 The Holocaust Planned internment, enslavement, and murder of Jews & other religious & ethnic minorities Perpetrated by Hitler’s Nazi Party By end of WWII, around 10 million people had died

7 Lend-Lease Congress passed Lend-Lease & Neutrality Acts before Pearl Harbor Purpose was to supply weapons to any country that would secure US safety/neutrality

8 Lend-Lease… After Pearl Harbor,
FDR approved $1 billion to aid Great Britain in 1941 Overall, gave around $50 million to Russia, G.B., France, & China

9 War Mobilization After P.H., over 5,000,000 men volunteered for the military But, we needed more men to fight this huge war Selective Service Sys. the draft to increase military size

10 War Mobilization… But, need for men was SO great, women had to mobilize also Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps formed to fill non-combat positions so men could fight EX: nurses, technicians, etc.

11 War Rationing Conserving was important in the US
Government made mandatory rationing system Each household got coupon books for certain scarce items EX: meat, sugar, coffee, gas

12 Wartime Conversion To meet military supply needs, factories converted to wartime use Lasted until the war ended EX: Ford company built Army jeeps/vehicles

13 Role of Women in Wartime Industries
Soldiers needed tanks, guns, ships, planes, & bullets, etc. More than 6 million women worked in wartime factories to produce military supplies But, only paid around 60% of what the men made

14 D-Day Code name for first day of “Operation Overlord”-plan to invade Nazi-occupied France June 6, 1944 Largest seaborne invasion in history

15 D-Day… Over 156,000 crossed the English Channel in over 6,000 ships
German troops gave heavy resistance But, overall the invasion went as planned

16 D-Day… Marked the beginning of victory for the Allied nations in Europe

17 Los Alamos Here, American government developed 2 atomic bombs in a secret laboratory Located in Los Alamos, New Mexico

US knew how much we would lose by trying to capture Japan President Truman decided to avoid invasion Planned to use brand new weapon, never seen before…

Bombs dropped on Japan in early August 1945 Japan surrendered by the next month

20 Teheran, Potsdam, Yalta Important meetings of Allied leaders
Churchill, Stalin, FDR/Truman Held discussions on Allied plans for what would happen in Europe after the war was over

21 Impact of Allied Negotiations on Eastern Europe
Allies had to give in to Stalin (Soviet Union) Soviet Union gained influence in Eastern Europe

22 Marshall Plan America’s main program for rebuilding Western Europe & opposing Communism after WWII We gave assistance to European nations damaged by the war

23 Marshall Plan… Soviet Union rejected help from the United States

24 MacArthur & Japan General Douglas MacArthur appointed Supreme Commander of Allied Powers in Japan after WWII Worked with Japanese gov’t to create a new constitution and run the government
