1 Religious attitudes to matters of life
LO: To explore issues in this unit

2 Key terms- match up Sanctity of life Value of life Quality of life
How comfortable you are/ free from pain Life is sacred/ special a gift from God How much is life worth/should life be saved

3 Fertility treatment IVF- In vitro fertilisation (In glass pregnancy)
This is the method of making someone p………… by taking sperm and egg and f…………….them in a t……. Tube. The fertilised egg is then put back inside the woman and then she will become pregnant

4 Louise Brown First test t…… baby Born in 1977
Doctor took e….. From mother and s……… from father and made Louise in a test tube. The fertilised egg was then placed back inside her mother and grew into a baby.

5 Test t……. Baby ( a baby created outside the woman)
Artificial insemination by H………… (AIH) B This is where the h………… sperm is taken from the wife and she is made pregnant with his sperm in a clinic.(Not through sex. Artificial insemination by D……… (AID) This is where a woman is made p……….. by sperm from a sperm d……… The sperm is inserted into the woman either from a stranger or friend donor

6 Donor sperm What is your opinion on sperm donation by a stranger
AID – (Getting sperm from a sperm bank) Some religious and non religious people are against this as : The donor is a stranger Could be seen as cheating ( not your husbands sperm) Unmarried people could bring up a child on their own Gay couples could have a child The child will grow up not knowing their dad What is your opinion on sperm donation by a stranger

7 IVF ‘Test tube babies’ Good Bad
Everyone should have a right to have children Could lead to people ‘designing’ their babies in Test tubes (removing bad features) Expensive Kind act to help couples who can’t have kids Not very successful, you usually have to have a few goes Too many eggs get destroyed during IVF… is this destroying Other possible lives ( 1 egg chosen out of 8) Allows gay people to have children

8 Christian views on IVF( delete appropriate)
Most Christians would support/hate IVF because they believe it is kind/horrible to help someone have a baby. They would use the teaching to ‘love your neighbour as yourself/enemy’ and would therefore say it is nice/mean to help someone who can’t have children/elves They would also say that God has given us the intelligence/ superpowers to come up with the idea of IVF and if God/Santa has allowed us to create/ destroy this science it must be ok/bad

9 ‘IVF is a good thing’ What do you think? Explain your opinion
IVF can be seen as a good process because…………………………………. On the other hand some people say it is bad because…………………………. Christians might say that…………………………

10 Surrogacy: ‘ carry someone's baby’
Surrogacy is the act of one woman carrying another woman's fertilised egg. The couple may have working sperm and e……s but cannot carry a baby. Therefore the surrogate will let the baby grow inside her and then give it to the couple

11 Religious quotes you can use…
“ We are all made in the image of G……………” “ God gives l…………. Only God can take it a……..” “ Love your n……………… as yourself” “ It is Allah who created y……..”

12 Transplant surgery and blood transfusion
Transplant = When someone else's o…….. Are put into a patient e.g. kidney/ heart Blood transfusion = When a patient is given extra b……… in an operation

13 Christianity and Islam on blood transfusions
Most Christians and Muslims are ok  with blood transfusions. They would say it is kind to save a life. The teachings are: ‘Love your n………….. as yourself’ (CHRISTIANITY) ‘If anyone saves a l……. it would be as if he had saved the life of all people ’ (ISLAM) Jehovah’s witnesses = against blood transfusions because life is carried through b…….. so you can’t have someone else's life running through their b………. ‘For the life of the creature is in the blood’ Bloodless transplants are acceptable.

14 Human genetic engineering
The changing of g…….. / dna of a person to alter their make up/ appearance/ features Human genetic engineering The study of human embryos Embryology Babies with features chosen by their parents which is illegal Designer babies

15 Pros  and cons  :Genetic engineering
Prevents diseases ( if we can remove it the person will have a better life) Good Bad Is it saying people with disabilities are not good enough (if you want to remove imperfections) Destroying other embryos/ killing possible other lives How far will people go? Will we all be the same? No individuality

16 Religion and genetic engineering
Many religious people are against genetic engineering as it is seen as playing G…… They may also believe that life begins at conception (when sperm and egg meet) so you are technically editing/ destroying a life Some may argue ‘God gives life only G….. Can take it a…………..’ this means don’t mess with creation! Others may argue that God has given people intelligence to come up with these scientific developments so they must be ok.

17 Saviour siblings A child who is created through genetic engineering as a perfect match for a sick brother or sister . Their cells are usually used to help their sibling Do you think this is a good way of using genetic engineering? Explain your opinion

18 Cloning Cloning is an exact genetic copy of the original
Reproductive cloning: Cloning of animal or human cells. Many animals are cloned. Therapeutic cloning: Cloning of material to make embryos which we can take cells from Human cloning is illegal Science keeps developing and there are grey areas with the law with regards to reproductive cloning

19 To clone or not to clone Are these statements for or against cloning?
It helps with research ( could help sick people Its against the nature by which we were created Its kind and improves life quality Affects identity (exact copies- is it a person?) We are intelligent to develop it- must be ok Does it have a soul?

20 Exam questions Explain briefly what is meant by ‘in vitro fertilisation’ (2) Explain why some religious people might be in favour of IVF (4)

21 Exam questions ‘Religious believers should not use surrogacy’ (3)
What do you think? Explain your opinion Give two reasons why a religious person oppose (may be against) AID (4)

22 6mark question ‘People should not be interfering with matters of life/ creating babies’ What do you think? On one hand they should do things like IVF/surrogacy/ AID/AIH because….. On the other hand they shouldn’t interfere because…… Christians and Muslims would say that………

23 6markers ‘ Religion teaches us all we need to know about matters of life’ Some people agree Some people disagree My opinion is that….
