1 Add Tens and Ones on an Open number line MAFS.2.NBT.2.9 (DOK 3)
Lesson 3.3 Add Tens and Ones on an Open number line MAFS.2.NBT.2.9 (DOK 3)

2 Learning Goal The students will use strategies for adding numbers within 100.

3 Objective Students will be able to explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations.

4 Scale 3- I can, with no help, explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations. 2- I can, with limited help, explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations. 1- I need a lot of help to explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations. 0- I can’t, even with help, explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations.

5 Solve & Share How can you use the open number line to find ? Write an equation to show the sum. Explain your work. + =

6 H.O.T. to consider during the lesson
1. Explain how using place value or the properties of operation help you solve this problem. 2. How does decomposing a number help solve addition or subtraction problems?

7 Turn to page 136 Follow along as I read the Visual Learning Bridge.
Let’s look at problem 1 & 2 and use the break apart method to solve the equations. = ______ 83 59 79 80 83 I used an open number line and decomposed the number 24 by place value. I added 20 to 59 and got the answer 79. I then added 1 to make a ten and then added the last 3 getting the answer 83. 1. Explain how using place value or the properties of operation help you solve this problem. 2. How does decomposing a number help solve addition or subtraction problems?

8 Question 2 =_____ 72 47 72 67 70 I used an open number line and decomposed the number 25 by place value. I added 20 to 47 and got the answer 67. I then added 3 to make a ten and got to 70 and then added the last 2 getting the answer 72. 1. How can you solve this addition problem? How is this addition problem related to subtraction? 2. How can you solve this problem using a different strategy?

9 Objective reminder Students will be able to explain why addition and subtraction strategies work, using place value and the properties of operations.

10 Kagan Structure- Think Pair Share
Partner A- shortest or shorter hair answer Questions 3, 5, and 6. Partner B- shortest or shorter hair answer Question 3, 5, and 6. Remember to use accountable talk and listening skills. Explain how you solved the equation.

11 You do Work question 7 by yourself.

12 Exit Ticket- write in journal
8. There are 24 apples in a basket. There are 19 apples on a tray. How many apples are there in all? 9. Jamie has 27 more berries than Lisa. Lisa has 37 berries. How many berries does Jamie have? Draw open number line to answer questions in journal. Use questions 8 and 9 to answer H.O.T.S 1. Explain how using place value or the properties of operation help you solve this problem. 2. How does decomposing a number help solve addition or subtraction problems?

13 Rate yourself and explain why you are that rating
3- I can, with no help, fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. 2- I can, with limited help, fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. 1- I need a lot of help to add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. 0- I can’t, even with help, add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
