1 Future of EDIPO Meeting
MIT-PSFC Comments MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center future research is focused on development of very high field magnets for compact fusion reactors. REBCO Tape – multitape cables/conductors Conductors with currents 30 – 100 kA Peak magnetic field T Operating temperature near 20 K Cooled by supercritical hydrogen We would like to test short lengths of relevant conductors in test facilities during conductor development program First samples available about 1 year from now An important feature of the test is to generate Bpeak x Iop at relevant temperature and also do Lorentz force cycling.

2 High-Field, Superconductor Demountable Magnets are the Game-Changing Technology for Magnetic Fusion
ITER is example of previous state-of-art in superconductor magnets Very large size > 2 years to replace interior shield ARC is example of using new high-field superconductor magnets Decrease volume by factor of ten! Modular replacement of interior Simple liquid blanket for electricity + eliminate blanket DPA limits Fusion power: 500 MW Electrical power: 0 MW Fusion power: 500 MW Electrical power: 250 MW Same Science!

3 The ARC conceptual design: Fusion power at small size = Power density
B. Sorbom et al FED 2015 Replaceable “core” module 500 MW fusion power ~200 MW electricity ~ 4 MW/m2 fusion power density New HTS magnet at~20 T, 20 K R=3.2 meters

6 MIT-PSFC Position on Future of EDIPO:
(page 1 of 2) The loss of EDIPO for the next few years is a large hit to the MFE program and us in particular. It was a truly unique facility. The world's programs need the ability to do high current, high-field HTS tests, every lab has some of this going on. We should try to come up with a solution that does not delay this work. We think we will acquire significant resources to do test through qualification in the next 2 years that will move toward significant tests in the next year. We support the rebuilding of EDIPO over the next few years. Suggest that if rebuilding it for the future, do it at higher field, as high as possible. This then supports the work toward reactor relevant as a next step beyond ITER technology

7 MIT-PSFC Position on Future of EDIPO:
(page 2 of 2) Unfortunately our near-term timelines are not well in line with the time required to rebuild EDIPO. We would be willing to pay to help support Sultan over the next two-three years so we, and the world, has a facility to continue advanced conductor development. We would be willing to negotiate some sort of formal agreement to formalize access to Sultan. This requires adapting the HTS leads and transformer from EDIPO to Sultan or buiild a new system to upgrade this facility. We are willing to assist in support and upgrade of this facility We are willing to consider other options to assist with this project pending outcome from this meeting and further consideration at MIT.
