1 Context and next steps Day 2.
Adam Peters and Graham Merrington 2017

2 So, I’ve done a risk assessment? What next?
Original purpose? Iteration Validation Decision making Risk measures and mitigation Communication 2017

3 So, I’ve done a risk assessment?
Characterised potential (actual?) risks in matrices in the environment At a range of scales? Process is clear, data used referenced (CCME – only publically available data, JRC –WFD Prioritisation only meta data) Uncertainties identified qualitatively and quantitatively 2017

4 What next? Original purpose Iteration Validation
Ensure continual reminder of scope (it was a risk and NOT just a hazard assessment?) Iteration Depends on purpose, but could include; Improved data (exposure or effects) Alternative methodology Spatial scales WoE? Validation Is what you found reasonable? Fits the science, not the policy? Policy Based Evidence

5 What next? Decision making Risk measures and mitigation
Evidence to feed into decision making process Risk assessment only part of the process, e.g. policy, cost-benefit Risk measures and mitigation Influence exposures or hazards BAT Bans, restrictions….. 2017

6 Communication This is a key, and often largely ignored step.
Important to ensure process is clear to stakeholders before you begin Many will see it as complicated, to do with COSHH, awkward, some ruse to stop kids using swings in playgrounds… If the risk assessment is to form valid evidence in the decision making process it is imperative that decision makers understand it! The context and limitations of the assessment NEED to form part of the communication Be true to the assessment and the evidence Stakeholders Risk Assessor 2017
