7 Take out Composition Notebook
Open notes to: 4.4: Logarithmic Functions This is due at

8 Special Properties of Logs
Logs of base b Logs of 1

9 Special Properties of Logs
.

10 Common Logs Common Logarithm Log with base 10
If no base is written for a logarithm, the base is assumed to be 10 EX: log 5 = log105.

11 Natural Logs Natural Logarithm
A logarithm with a base of e, but instead of writing loge we abbreviate as ln. Is expressed as the function y = ln x This is the inverse for y = ex. Since they are inverses, ln e =

12 Examples Example: Evaluate the expression log7(1/49). **Hint**
Try setting log7(1/49) = x

13 Example 3

14 Logarithm War Who has played the card game War?
This is a two player game, so you will be partners with someone at your table. Every group will receive a deck of logarithm expressions. You will randomly split up the deck amongst both of you (each person should have 15). You can shuffle your cards in the beginning if you like, but once the game begins you must always take the first card in your deck and play it. The player with the highest evaluated expression takes all the cards played. If it is a tie, then you must deal W-A-R( 3 cards) and the 4th card will be the determining factor of who gets that pile.

15 Logarithm War For example: MS. HULS’ card: log3 (1/3)
MS. STANDFIELD’S card: log4 (16) Who would win?

16 Learning Objectives By the end of the period you will be able to:
Evaluate expressions involving logarithms Write, evaluate, and graph logarithmic functions and inequalities. Use properties to simplify logarithmic expressions

17 Example 4 on Packet

18 4.4: Logs Finding domain of logs: Set what is in the ( ) > 0 EX)
Show in notes!!!

19 Example 5 on Packet

20 4.4: Logs Graphing Log Functions: Create exponential table ( use base)
Create log table Create transformation table EX) Show in notes!!!

22 Earthquake! 40 Seconds that Shook L.A.
You can use this website to track earthquakes world-wide. 40 Seconds that Shook L.A. At 4:31 Monday morning an earthquake registering 6.6 on the Richter scale jolted residents of Los Angeles from their sleep. It was not The Big One, but it left at least 55 people dead, brought down major freeways and destroyed or damaged thousands of homes. Source: Chicago Tribune Newspaper 1994
