2 Review of Chapter 6 Analytical Instruments
Instruments designed to monitor chemical and physical properties of a process stream These are instruments that can continuously monitor a process stream The analyzer system catches a sample, sends it to an analyzer, conditions the sample, analyzes the sample and returns the sample to the system

3 CHAPTER 7 SPEED Speed and Vibration

4 VIBRATION Vibration is a random movement of an object
Vibration meters are used to measure velocity, acceleration or displacement Usually have a sensor, amplifier and output devices Vibration is measured in large or high speed equipment to prevent catastrophic failure

5 Vibration Types AXIAL – side to side RADIAL – out of round
Measured with an Accelerometer Self activated – Piezoelectric sensor Heavy metal sitting on a crystal – strained in motion Creates a voltage output which is transduced and converted to a digital readout

6 Speed Speed = Distance traveled per unit of time
Velocity = Speed with a direction Speed is measured with a sensor and a readout Sensors include tachometers, induction measurement, or magnetic proximity signal Speed is either rectilinear (mph) or rotational (rpm) Car speed is measured by rpm and tire circumference

7 Conversions 1 mile = 5280 feet 1 knot = 1.15 miles
1 kilometer = miles 1 yard = 36 inches 1 meter = inches 1 mile = 1.61 kilometers

8 Exercise #1 = 2 hours Speed = 70 mph Distance to travel = 140 miles
How long does it take = 140 m/ 70 mph = 2 hours

9 Exercise #2 Time = 165 m / 75 mph 2.2 hours 2 hours and 12 minutes
Graham, Texas is about 165 miles Speed = 75 mph Calculate time to drive to Graham Time = 165 m / 75 mph 2.2 hours 2 hours and 12 minutes Determine the Velocity if the heading is 315° 315° = NW The velocity is 75 mph NW

10 Exercise #3 Pittsburgh is 1400 miles from Corsicana on a heading of 45° We are driving at 55 mph How long will it take? What is our velocity?

11 Exercise #4 We are 1250 miles from Atlanta, Georgia on a heading of 90° We are traveling at 180 knots How long will it take? What is our velocity?

12 Exercise #5 It is 116,160 feet to Blooming Grove, Texas
You are walking at 1 mile every 14 minutes How long does it take for you to walk to Blooming Grove?

13 Exercise #6 Homework It is 1300 miles to Los Angeles on a 270° heading
We are driving at 53 mph How long will the trip take? What is our velocity?
